Ashleigh + Soane by Pause Films and Photo

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship?

We are a Teacher and Doctor duo, a combo who love to help others and serve those around us.

Ashleigh is the organised one – maybe a little obsessive at times, keeping things moving along. Soane is the realistic one and occasionally not as interested in planning things like Ashleigh. We complement each other though ensuring there is fun and enjoyment together each day. Initially brought together by a mutual bestie, we were set up on a blind date and flourished from there. Soane set it in stone by delivering flowers for graduation.

Together, we now live in a downtown apartment, and embrace the city life as much as we can. Walking to local cafes, and embracing restaurants in the nooks of the city. Whilst food is a central pillar to our relationship, we do love exercise and set goals each year to run half marathons and travel to new parts of the world. Hopping on a plane, in a car or on a ferry is always on our mind to explore the world around us. So far we have tackled many countries including New Zealand and we hope to travel more.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details?

Our wedding is something we would describe as eclectic. Nothing matched, but at the same time everything suited and worked. We didn’t have a vision beyond wanting to make it ours and know that our guests could see ‘us’ throughout the day. From 50c mixes straight after the ceremony to canned drinks as our celebratory toast, we knew that our day was to be chill,  but organised.  Although we got married at a beach, I was sure to have it coastal rather than ‘beachy’, making the most of our cliff top location and then a ferry across to our reception. I think our wedding was a big journey for our guests, they followed our story right from the van to the ceremony through to the ferry at the reception. Cooks Beach and Whitianga are our place, there is where our relationship grew, became officially a couple, got engaged and now married with our friends and family.

Tell us about your main outfits?

Ashleigh: My dress was my dream. The one thing I knew for sure was I wanted all lace, fitting and super comfy. The Daisy Aster dress was all of that. Occasionally self-conscious about my 6ft height, I never could have imagined feeling as amazing as I did in the dress. I added extra lace to the top (and extra length). Soane: My outfit was pieced together. Each piece perfect to suit me. Bonobos offers amazing pants to fit those with more of a booty. I wanted to look similar to my boys, but still stand out. Ashleigh always reminded me it was my day to shine too.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Lollies straight after the ceremony – absolute dream. One of Ashleigh’s best friends was a huge part, after travelling home from Canada. David was a bridesmaid getting ready, a groomsman in the line and a MC for the reception. We had a bridal party of 15 including us. We caught a boat to our reception (as did our guests, but ours got us to our reception venue right outside!) Our photographers did a slideshow at the reception of some photos of the day, a great surprise and the guests loved seeing the day so quickly.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

In regards to weddings: Don’t stress the small stuff, keep it your way not what people say to do. Stop your involvement 3 days out, get a massage and delegate after that. This was the best advice a bride before me gave! In regards to life: Always say I love you at night. Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions. Give a passing cuddle or snuggle as you walk by. Enjoy your personal time, but encourage time to chill together too.
