Deven + Marina by Nikki Mc Crone Photography

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

We met 10 years ago, two strangers, a chance encounter, we just clicked. Dev is a tradie and Marina works for a Melbourne fashion label so we both love to work with our hands and have an eye for detail….

Marina comes up with the vision and Dev works out how to construct it. We look forward to coming home to each other at the end of every day and generally do everything together (yes even the grocery shop). We enjoy going on adventures, travelling, taking our dog Indy to the beach and finding tv shows you want to go ahead and watch but know you can’t because it’s something you do together.

Marina: Dev makes me laugh and reminds me not to be so serious all the time.

Dev: Marina always laughs at my dumb jokes and keeps me in line.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…

It was a spring wedding done in autumn hues. Rich and dark colours with some flare. Set in the beautiful and peaceful town of Castlemaine. The ceremony was held in the botanical gardens overlooking a duck filled lake. And the reception was in the garden of the bridge hotel. Even though we live in Melbourne it was always going to be a country wedding. With lots of family and friends coming from all over. We wanted it to be a weekend celebration– something which allowed us to spend quality time with all our guests. Castlemaine was perfect for this and had everything we needed within walking distance.

We did all the styling ourselves and had teams help set up on the day. We spent months sourcing props and glassware, testing cocktails and finding the perfect beers.  All the flowers for the arbour were from Marina’s parents flower farm which was pretty special.  A friend played piano as marina walked down the aisle – just the music was enough to make you cry.

Cocktail hour straight after the ceremony was brilliant. We had a big table set up with monogrammed glasses and tubs of drinks. People could help themselves. It allowed us to  see all our guests straight away and then we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. We hired a vintage velvet couch and it worked so well for photos and meant we could get all of the shots without having to leave the party. Most of all we wanted the day to be fun, casual and a great party!

Tell us about your main outfits:

Dev wore a two piece linen suit from Jack London in a deep red wine colour. The suit cuts are really flattering and it was the first one he saw. It worked so well and complimented the dress perfectly.

For Marina it was always going to be the Petal gown by Temperley London. Layers of tulle appliqued with printed silk anemone blooms, embroidered with hummingbirds and delicately scattered with shimmering sequins. It had to be bought online without ever trying it on and they were literally selling out of sizes within hours of being released. Thankfully it fit  and only had to get a few minor adjustments. The veil was duck egg blue to balance out all the pinks. “I initially  I wasn’t going to do a full veil but the drama it added was fantastic so I just went with it”

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Walking in – it’s always overwhelming having everyone you love in the one place.  Or you can’t go past the speeches, can you? Most people are always waiting for them. But for us it was our first dance. A friend had choreographed a routine for us to ‘Ain’t That a Kick in the Head’ by Dean Martin. Most of our friends and family didn’t think Dev had those moves in him. We blew everyone away and it kicked off an epic dance floor which continued through until the end of the night.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

Do it! Dive right in and go for it. Life is short. Spend it with someone you love riding life’s rollercoaster. Wedding tip: It is easy to get caught up in the hype of planning a wedding, but all you really need is good food, good drinks and a rocking dance floor. Nobody notices the rest.
