Hannah + Duncan by Katy Durn Photographics

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship:

Hannah from England and Duncan from Scotland. We met on Tinder in May 2018 and our first date was in July 2018. We mutually decided that long distance wasn’t for us when Hannah moved to Australia and Duncan was still in the UK. The distance and trying not to love each other were not enough to separate us, we just grew closer friends and deeper in love through it.

We faced tough trials together across the waters – lockdown, health, pandemic, major life changes and decisions. We both knew this was the partner we wanted to do life with in all its ups and downs. Duncan managed to secure a job in Australia and so we settled in Adelaide.

Hannah loves Duncan’s heart for God more than anything else and his child-like love for life’s simple pleasures.  Duncan loves Hannah’s joy for life and eagerness to try new things.

Duncan proposed spontaneously on a camping trip away, in the tent whilst it was raining outside!

We both have a deep love for climbing, the outdoors, nature and playing outside like big kids!

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details:

In nature, and in Gods design. Simple, intimate, not too much fuss or effort, stress-free and a comfortable place that feels like family. Boho/ natural details.

We chose our venue because it was peaceful, surrounded by nature, homely, comfortable and easy.

We did all the wedding planning and prep together. Planned in two months. No family was able to be there because of the pandemic, so they were all in the UK. We livestreamed the ceremony to them and our parents and grandparents wrote readings for the ceremony which were read out by our friends. We had a beautiful collection of close friends from church we call family present with us – 17 in total. Friends did the grazing platters and the bbq. Despite it being May, the sun wash shining, wind and rain held off and it was a beautifully warm day. Sun radiated down perfectly on Hannah’s procession. We both hand wrote our own vows in cute books our friend made for us. Hannah’s mum did a speech via zoom at the reception.

We DIY’d everything – Friend designed the arbour greenery, we bought the arbor for cheap off marketplace. Friends designed the platters. DIY vow books, hair, Duncan’s outfit, guestbook and Polaroid station. Friend made the cake. DIY bbq. DIY set up outside. DIY boutonnière with greenery picked from the yorke peninsula.

Tell us about your main outfits:

The wedding dress was from Bridal on Payneham. Its simple and elegant which was the main feel of our day. We got Duncan’s outfit from a few high street stores, mainly David Jones. Again simple and no fuss.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day:

“I do” was our favourite moment

2 minutes before the procession, Duncan had to run from the alter to get tissues because he knew he was going to cry! He did all the way through his vows (happy tears) and Hannah didn’t once!

Hannah looked high and low for kissproof lipstick (because Duncan refuses to kiss with hannah wearing lipstick!) on the wedding day, Hannah made the mistake of putting Vaseline on as well… Duncan’s mouth was covered in red after our first kiss at the alter haha!

Duncan got his outfit a week before.

Hannah’s bouquet didn’t arrive, so had to find somewhere the day before the wedding, thanks Indy Rose!

When we went to dip our toes in the water at our beach shoot, a big wave came an soaked us both to our calves. Including Hannah’s dress. It was all fun though!!

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together:

Weddings do not need to be expensive. We spent 1/10th of the cost a lot of people do and it was beautiful, simple and just perfect. Keep it stress free and avoid the fancy details… no-one notices. Be happy, enjoy yourself and the simple beauty of coming together as one. The day is about love.

To us, marriage means we are united in covenant with one another and God. Committed to serving one another and supporting one another for life in a partnership. We believe that service and support are the keys to a strong relationship.
