Petra & Sam by Oriwia Soutar

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

We were both born and raised in New Zealand, Petra in Gisborne and Sam in Blenheim.

We both moved too Perth in 2012, however our paths didn’t cross until early 2014 when Sam approached me at bar. I wasn’t so sure about him at first but soon succumbed to his charm.

From the moment we meet it was like we had already known each other for a life time, perhaps having that kiwi up-bringing enriched the same morals and things alike in the both of us. Whatever it was, we just clicked and have been best friends since.

The both of us are guilty for working too much. Sam’s a Supervisor in the mining industry so he spends prolonged periods of time away from home and then comes home and continues to work. I work in West Australia’s largest hospital procuring pharmaceutical drugs and creating medicines, it offers me a lot over time but on a more positive note I get to go to work to do something I’m truly passionate about.

So when we do get to spend time together, we are complete home-bodies and love to park up with some takeaways, wine and binge series on Netflix. We also love to take advantage of Perths beautiful beaches and amazing cafes.

The unique thing about our relationship is that we are so alike, we’re weird. Two completely different people yet so the same. Its a good question and hard to explain but we are just each other’s best friend.

Tell us about your main outfits:

Sam: Initially we were going to have our ceremony down on the beach so with that in mind I knew I wanted to keep things somewhat casual but still look smart. I was either super organised or just over keen because I had all the suits ready to go about a year out from the day.

Petra: I knew I wanted something elegant but also very simple. I don’t like the fuss or spending hours in and out shopping so I had picked out a shop I wanted to go to and a dress I liked. Both bridesmaids live in different states and my mum in NZ so I was never going to have the big day out shopping for ‘the dress’. As soon as I put the dress I saw online, I just knew it was the one. I paid my deposit and my bridesmaid Emma took me out for a bottle of rose to celebrate! When I had all of the girls over in Perth for my hens weekend I took them into the store with some champagne and got to experience/showcase my dress with them there. My parents had to wait until the morning of the wedding to get their special reveal and they loved my decision!

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Petra: Seeing the love of my life standing at the end of the aisle, after a crazy busy morning that sigh of relief seeing my best friend and knowing you’re about to spend the rest of my life with him was definitely my highlight. Secondly, the fact we got to experience the day at my favourite spot, my home with all of our family and friends, all for us

Sam: Well considering Petra is going to proof read this.. Marrying her of course! But no the whole day was really cool, the fellas and I started the day off with what some would call the breakfast of champions – a few steak and cheese pies washed down with a blue Powerade before heading out too the in-laws farm to shoot clay birds. It was an awesome way to calm the nerves and bond with the boys before s**t got real!

Walking into the venue and seeing nothing but smiles from all my family and friends was a feeling I’ll never forget and it was so incredible to know that they were all there for us.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?
Just enjoy the process, don’t sweat the small stuff and have fun! No-one will remember the finer details but more so the happiness and love they celebrated with you both. We wanted to keep it simple as we wanted it to be the best day of our lives not a hassle, it’s exceeded all of our expectations.
