Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…
I work as a paediatric nurse and Rob is an engineer. We both spent a lot of our younger years travelling, working in rural areas and spending time with friends and family, so we had a few things in common.
Rob and I met through our church community. The first time I met Rob, I came home to tell my housemate that I knew I would be with him one day – and a few weeks later that was exactly the case. We never told our parents we were seeing each other, we just rocked up on their doorstep one Sunday evening, and they were all pleasantly surprised. Rob and I spent a year seeing each other before Rob proposed and eight months later we were married. There’s no point postponing the inevitable! Funny fact – Rob’s dad taught me algebra in high school!
Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…
We wanted two different themes to our wedding day – the formal and official side, along with a casual, more relaxed atmosphere. Our wedding ceremony was the most important part and we wanted to keep this traditional and formal. We made our vows in front of God with our friends and family as witness, and had a string trio provide beautiful music to walk down the aisle to. Then, we were ready to celebrate! Katie and Erica from Duo Events created the most amazing outdoor space for our evening reception. We mingled with our guests by the Swan River, listening to live acoustic music, while eating freshly shucked oysters and drinking sparkling. It was a scorching 38 degrees during the day, which meant the evening was warm and balmy. We had nearly one kilometre of fairy lights installed through the trees and as an outdoor canopy – it was magical!
I love florals, so flowers were to be a big part of the day. The day before the wedding, Katie and Erica (our wedding planners) located some toffee colour roses and asked if I wanted them to feature – they were beyond amazing! My bouquet was big and beautiful, and all our family members wore buttonholes and corsages also. I had a little blue butterfly hidden in my bouquet, and mum had one hidden in her wrist corsage, which symbolized dad being close to us on the day, as he passed away from brain cancer nearly two years earlier.Â
Tell us about your main outfits:
We wanted a look that was simple but elegant. I wanted a no fuss wedding dress shopping experience – I saw my gown online, found a shop in Perth that stocked it and bought it! Rob wore his favourite men’s clothing brand. I loved my minimalist gown and had lots of compliments on the day. I also wore a pearl bracelet that mum wore 30 years earlier on her wedding day to dad – Rob had it dipped from yellow to white gold for my birthday before the wedding.Â
What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?
Without a doubt, one of my favourite moments of the day was having my mum walk me down the aisle. It was a very special moment being given away by such a strong, caring and loving woman who has influenced my life so much. One of Rob’s favourite things was the gin wheel we had made for the evening reception. It had selection of about 10 gins on offer, people would spin the wheel and the barman would serve them the gin they won – it turned out to be a massive hit! Another memorable moment was hearing the speeches both our families did. As we chose not to have a bridal party, we told both our families that they had to give a speech. Robs sister and brother wrote a hilarious tale of growing up with Rob, wedding guests still mention to us how funny it was.Â
Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?
We know life isn’t going to be easy, we have both had our fair share of grief and hardships, but marriage is about having someone there for you always even in the darkest valleys. A bit of advice that Rob and I hold dear to our marriage is the importance of both love and respect for each other, always. With these ideals at the centre, we know we will have a life long lasting marriage!
