Tell us what you do and how it came about..
We’re a brother and sister team that have been working together as Ash Hilton Jewellery making custom wedding and engagement rings for the past 15 years. A couple of years ago we set ourselves the goal of making the world’s most ethical wedding ring, which is where the concept for Good Gold was born. To make this possible we researched and made a commitment to sourcing the most ethical gold possible setting up our supply chains. We also ensured our workshop has as little impact on the environment as possible and we analyse every business decision we make, from packaging materials to becoming a Certified Living Wage employer.
What makes you and your work/business unique?
We know wedding rings can often be an afterthought in the wedding planning process, so we wanted to create an experience for our customers where the choices are simple while still making each ring purchase feel as special as it should. Each ring is handmade to order from New Zealand gold right here in our Nelson workshop. We’ve made sure every angle and edge is absolutely perfect and we obsess over the small details.
Our systems have become watertight over the last 15 years, so each ring is ready within 1-2 weeks (perfect for the last minute grooms we often hear from). We then ship worldwide for free.
We also understand it can be tricky ordering a ring without trying it on, so we offer free returns as well as free resizing. We hear from a lot of couples these days who want matching simplicity to symbolise their union and it makes us so happy to be able to provide this smooth online service when people are incredibly busy.
Any career aspirations you would like to share?
We’re in the process of becoming a B-Corp, if you’re not familiar, this sums it up: “Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. They are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. This is a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good.” (from Bcorporation.net)
Who has been your favourite couple you have worked with so far or one that you are most looking forward to working on any why?
What we love about having both businesses is that we get to make engagement rings as Ash Hilton Jewellery and then the couples often come back to have their wedding rings made by Good Gold. We just sent an engagement ring to one of our favourite New Zealand makers which we’re SO EXCITED about, but we can’t tell you who it is because we’d ruin the engagement surprise

Any artists, musicians, writers etc who inspire you?
Oh man, so many! We can’t get enough of @jvn (Jonathon Van Ness) and @ashleylongshoreart on instagram. We’ve never seen two people living their best lives in such super fun and authentic ways. We love our Nelson artists too, Josephine Cachemaile, Lisa Chandler, Sally Burton and Georgie Hoby Scutt

Our superpower is our customer service. Need a ring in two days? We might just be able to make it happen! Accidentally ordered the wrong size and the wedding is next Tuesday? We can sort you out.
