Kitty + Shalyn by Julia Rau Photography

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship:

I am from North America and Kitty is from New Zealand.

We met is Western Australia 6 years ago. We own and run a Coffee Shop/ Drive thru in Broome and spend our off time (which isn’t much) on the beach. We love the ocean and the coastline in Broome, it’s where we go to centre.

It’s hard to say what is unique about our relationship as we can’t compare it…… but we feel very lucky to be so comfortable with each other in life and work. We really do just love being around each other. It’s as simple as that. I hope it’s not unique. The more of ‘this’, the better.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details:

The vibe or style was casual and natural. We let the amazing Broome scenery do most of the work when it came to the setting of our wedding. The colours of the red pindan, against the turquoise water, and the massive sky are striking and were the perfect backdrop.
As for our look we also let the experts do the work. The amazing flowers by Broome Florist, and the hair and make-up by Bonnie Louise made us feel just that little bit of fancy that we wanted, while our red dirt stained feet, kept it real.

Tell us about your main outfits:

Being that we live somewhat remotely and during Covid, getting the exact outfits we imagined was a challenge. After weeks of online shopping fails, we let go. We decided that as long as we were comfortable in the moment it didn’t really matter what we wore…one of the perks of a beach elopement. We returned most of the ‘too big’ and ‘too small’ clothes and worked with what we could find locally, and in our closet. I took one pair of ‘too big’ pants and had a friend’s mum alter them to fit, and wore a shirt that had been hanging in the closet untouched. Kitty found a shirt and waistcoat last minute from a Pop-up vintage shop in town. It wasn’t as all what we planned but in the end we felt like ourselves and comfortable, and it was perfect.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day:

The Ceremony! As soon as we set bare foot on the sand time took over. We had no concept of it, nor did we care to. Our Celebrant Kelly Morrow was an amazing leader in our experience. She gave us the confidence to be ourselves, in the moment. Our ceremony was sprinkled with personal details that we had shared confidentially with her, they ‘popped up’ throughout and linked us with happy eyes and cheeky smiles. We were all in on it and that made us feel safe. Our photographer Julia Rau moved around us and captured the moments without interruption or distraction. She nailed it as you can see!

After an emotional and beautiful ceremony we popped some bubbles and toasted, as the sun set over the ocean and the moon rose above the red cliffs, it was sincerely magical.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together:

As far as advice for other couples, well we’re still figuring it out ourselves as we go… it’s a journey and a process of growing and learning together. But we’ve found openness and honesty to be key.
As far as the big day, try to stay present and have fun. Don’t forget to eat! and have a stiff drink before the photos, so you can relax a bit. But really its all about having a good team, our day wouldn’t have been as special if it weren’t for our amazing celebrant, photographer, and friends and family organizing everything!
