Elba —— I’m a content creator and Brett works in real estate. We met in college at an introduction to astronomy class. I thought Brett was handsome so I made the first move, complimenting him on his sneakers, and then I was desperately embarrassed!

But despite my awkward approach, we became friends and started dating. We’d planned a couple’s trip to Mexico but Brett had recently started a job and couldn’t join us. I begrudgingly went on my own.

At the hotel, I saw a trail of red rose petals on the path and thought one of the other boyfriends had planned something special. Then I saw Brett standing in the middle of the garden with soft jazz music playing in the background. Next thing I know, he was on one knee, holding an antique ring.

I was one of those brides that had her mood board ready years before the engagement. I knew I wanted lots of candles and billowing fabric. I’m a hopeless romantic so I wanted the day to have a soft, elegant and ethereal energy. I ended up developing a multi-layered canopy of antique chandeliers hung at different levels so guests would feel ‘wrapped’ in soft lighting.

I was happy to splurge on things that set the mood for the day, such as food and drink, music and decor because they’re what created the best experience for our guests.

When it came to my wedding gowns, I went in with an open mind and tried on numerous styles. For my ceremony, I’d seen a stunning lace and tulle gown on my stylist’s Instagram and although it wasn’t my usual style, I decided to try it on. It was from one of the latest collections and there was only one gown available for try-ons, so we had it flown in.

It was a strapless lace corset with a full tulle skirt, but we ended up styling it with a turtle-neck lace jacket that completely transformed it into the quintessential winter bride look I was hoping for. For my reception look, I fell in love with the iconic silky corseted Vivienne Westwood coquette gown — it was one of the first dresses I tried on, and the only one that made me tear up.

Our ceremony was in an old Catholic church in the heart of my home town in Mexico with walls encrusted with gold accents. The lace and tulle dress gave the setting the romance and drama it called for, while the silky corset of the Westwood gown was very ‘old-world romance’ so perfectly complemented the historic feel of the old Music and Ballet Academy where we hosted our reception and after party.
