Porter James Sports

Porter James Sports redefines modern menswear with an Antipodean edge.

Can you tell us how Porter James Sports began and what inspired its distinct fusion of classic tailoring with a contemporary edge?

I (Josh) started PJS just after the first lockdown in 2020, an idea born from not being able to find the clothes I personally wanted to wear on this side of the world. I’ve always found New Zealand’s menswear disconnected from the global zeitgeist of contemporary fashion.

That being said, I saw it as an opportunity to create a positive impact on how men dress throughout Australasia whilst sharing a Kiwi perspective with the rest of the world.

How would you describe the Porter James wearer — what sets him apart?

Whether a groom, groomsmen or guest, the Porter customer is someone who appreciates contemporary shape and premium fabrics. Typically, a considered, design-conscious individual with a strong sense of style.

What advice do you give to groomsmen who are deciding what to wear on a wedding day?

For groomsmen or guests, start with a black leather derby or loafer and work your way up. Stick to neutral colours like black or midnight navy paired with a white shirt. Express yourself quietly through fit and fabric.

Are there any fabrics, silhouettes, or styling details currently trending, whether that be for weddings or day-to-day wear?

We are drawn to relaxed-tailoring. No more slim-fitting suits, please, and thank you. Tailoring is extremely important. Your tailor is your best friend, and not just for weddings.

How does sustainability and conscious consumption play into your work and approach to fashion?

We’ll never pretend making clothes is sustainable, but the next best thing you can do is make pieces that endure trend and time, are not overproduced and are made to an exceptional standard.
