Bright, aromatic and unexpectedly grounded, Aesop’s new Unforeseen Aer Eau de Parfum is a fresh interpretation of the classic fougère. Crisp herbs meet the textured warmth of nutmeg in a fragrance that feels invigorating yet substantial, and distinctly Aesop.
The newest addition to Aesop’s fragrance world, Unforeseen Aer Eau de Parfum, begins with a deceptively simple question: How might change enrich us? Its inspiration comes from a fable about a gentle wind that initially fears the disruption it might cause, before learning to embrace the energy and possibility of disorder and imperfection.
That sense of movement translates beautifully into the fragrance itself. Unforeseen Aer is Aesop’s characteristically unconventional take on a classic fougère, built around geranium, lavandin and rosemary. Together, these form what the brand calls its Pure Air Fabulist Accord, intended to evoke cool air moving across rugged heights. Nutmeg is the fragrance’s Radical Ingredient, introducing a warmer, more nuanced quality that prevents all that freshness from becoming overly clean or sharp.
Together Journal editor Greta describes it as one of her favourite Aesop scents to date: bright, but also anchored. It is an apt description. There is an immediate clarity and freshness to Unforeseen Aer, but beneath it sits something earthier and more textural. It feels modern and quietly distinctive rather than overtly perfumed, making it the kind of fragrance that could easily become an everyday signature.
Its arrival also marks a broader evolution for Aesop fragrance. Fragrant Fables reframes the house’s 12 Eaux de Parfum through the worlds of literature and storytelling, building on two decades of perfumery that began with Marrakech. Inspired by Aesop’s ancient Greek namesake, each fragrance is accompanied by a fable-like poem exploring an idea such as authenticity, freedom, resilience or trust.
The bottles have evolved too. Aesop’s recognisable amber glass remains, now refined with a taller silhouette, domed base and tactile cap inspired by basalt rock found around Melbourne, where the brand was founded. The atomiser can also be removed more easily for recycling.
In a fragrance landscape increasingly interested in individuality rather than traditional ideas of masculine or feminine scent, Unforeseen Aer feels particularly relevant. Fresh without being fleeting, herbal without feeling medicinal, and warm without becoming heavy, it captures something Aesop does especially well: finding intrigue in contrasts.
