Exploring the beauty of honest, heartfelt storytelling.

Inspired by thoughtful design, meaningful connection and the beauty of destination celebrations, Ana Paola Hernandez approaches every wedding with a quiet sense of intention. Her work seamlessly balances refined editorial portraiture with honest, unscripted storytelling, creating imagery that feels both timeless and deeply personal. We sat down with Ana to talk about the people behind the celebrations, the moments that continue to inspire her, and the privilege of preserving stories that will be treasured for generations to come.

Your approach begins with truly getting to know your couples and their vision. What have you learned about people through the process of documenting so many different love stories?

When I meet couples at the beginning of their wedding planning journey, one of the things I love most is seeing how differently each couple envisions their celebration. Every wedding is unique. Some couples place greater emphasis on the ceremony and their faith; others dream of an unforgettable party with incredible food and music, while many create multi-day experiences that allow their family and friends to discover the beauty of their wedding destination. Yet, despite all those differences, every wedding comes down to the same thing: celebrating their love with the people who matter most.

You are inspired by fashion and thoughtful design. Are there particular elements or details on a wedding day that immediately spark your creativity?

The first thing that always captures my attention is colour. It becomes the thread that connects every part of the wedding and creates such a beautiful visual story: from the florals and paper goods to the tablescape, fashion, accessories, and bridal party.

I also have a genuine mini obsession with the bride, especially the wedding dress and, of course, the veil. To me, the veil is one of the most distinctive symbols of being a bride. It’s a piece she’ll likely never wear again, and I love finding elegant, editorial ways to incorporate it into my photographs.

Beyond fashion, I’m always inspired by beautifully designed ceremony and reception spaces. So much intention, creativity, and collaboration go into bringing those environments to life, and my role is to honour the work of the couple and their incredible vendor team by capturing every detail with the same care they invested in creating it.

Your work beautifully blends refined portraiture with documentary storytelling. How do you balance creating something visually elevated while still allowing moments to unfold naturally?

For me, it’s about finding the balance between preparation and presence.

Before the wedding day, I spend time getting to know the couple and collaborating with their planner. We discuss the timeline, logistics, design details, and, most importantly, what matters most to them. That preparation allows me to arrive with a clear creative vision and ideas that reflect their personalities rather than following a formula.

Once the day begins, however, my focus shifts to being completely present. Weddings are beautifully unpredictable, and while having a plan is essential, the most meaningful photographs often come from the unexpected. My goal is to create timeless, intentional portraits while remaining fully in tune with the energy of the day, allowing those genuine moments to unfold naturally.

Travel plays a significant role in shaping your perspective. How has photographing celebrations across different destinations influenced the way you tell a story?

It is an incredible privilege to travel to beautiful places and document one of the most meaningful days in someone’s life. While destination weddings certainly come with their challenges, they continue to be one of the greatest passions.

Every destination brings its own character: the landscape, architecture, culture, and colours all become part of the story I’m telling. Rather than simply documenting a wedding, I love creating images that feel rooted in the place where the celebration happened.

You often mention being drawn to quiet, in-between moments. What are some of those fleeting exchanges that never fail to move you?

It’s always the moments that happen when people forget the camera is there.

I love watching a couple quietly hold hands during dinner, exchanging a smile or a glance while everyone else is caught up in the celebration. I love seeing guests sharing stories over cocktails, parents taking in the day from across the room, or grandparents embracing family members they haven’t seen in years. Those small, unplanned moments often become some of the most meaningful memories.

And then there are the speeches. They never fail to move me. The laughter, the tears, the reactions across the room, and the genuine connections between people are impossible to recreate. Those are the moments that remind me why I love documentary photography so much, and they’re honest, emotional, and completely irreplaceable.

Knowing that your photographs will become part of a family’s legacy is a powerful idea. How does that sense of responsibility influence the way you approach your work?

I don’t take that responsibility lightly. In fact, it’s one of the reasons I care so deeply about what I do. While I’m photographing a wedding day for my couple, I’m also preserving memories that future generations will treasure. Hopefully one day their children and grandchildren will be turning the pages of their wedding album and discovering the beginning of their family’s story.

Beautiful destinations continually fuel your creativity. Is there a place you’ve photographed that has left a lasting impression on you, and what made it so memorable?

Every destination has left its own mark on me, but my most recent trip to St. Lucia was especially memorable. The landscape is simply breathtaking, the people were incredibly warm and welcoming, and there was such a peaceful energy throughout the island. Seeing the Pitons for the first time was unforgettable. They have such a striking presence and energy, and I left knowing I couldn’t wait to return.

Connection sits at the heart of everything you do. How do you create an environment where couples feel comfortable, seen and completely themselves in front of your camera?

It all begins long before the wedding day. Taking the time to meet my couples, understand who they are, and build a genuine connection allows trust to develop naturally.

Trust is everything. I want my couples to know that I genuinely care about them and that they’re in experienced hands. I’m always paying attention to how they’re feeling, anticipating when they may need a quiet moment, a little extra time, or simply someone to reassure them.

I also remind them that their wedding day isn’t meant to feel like an all-day photoshoot. It’s about being fully present with the people they love. When couples feel comfortable enough to forget they’re being photographed, that’s when the most genuine moments happen.

If you had to choose, what excites you most creatively: fashion, thoughtful design, beautiful destinations or the emotions shared between people? Or is choosing impossible?

Without question, it’s the emotions shared between people.

I absolutely love all of that, and they all inspire me creatively and elevate the visual story. But if the emotion isn’t there, the photographs won’t have the same lasting impact.

The connection between a couple, the energy in the room, the tears during a speech, the laughter on the dance floor, and the quiet moments in between are what truly make a wedding unforgettable. Those are the moments that continue to resonate long after.

Looking ahead to the next few years, what excites you most about this chapter of your career and the stories still waiting to unfold?

I’m excited to continue discovering new destinations, photographing at beautiful venues, and collaborating with new talented wedding planners. More than anything, I’m incredibly grateful to every couple who places their trust in me. Being invited into one of the most meaningful days of their lives is something I’ll never take for granted. I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes me and the love stories that will be captured.
