Caitlin + Andrew by Stephan & Nakita

I proposed at one of our favourite spots, Man O War at Waiheke, during a weekend’s sailing trip. We’d had a nice afternoon with a few wines and were heading back to the boat when I said I’d left my credit card at the bar.

Caitlin —— I’m a fashion designer (see story page 24). Outside work I love the ocean, sailing and karaoke. I grew up in Christchurch but am now based in Auckland.

Andrew —— I grew up in Karaka and have lived in the same house since I was two – to get married at the same property was incredibly special. I work in the commercial property development space, developing commercial office buildings, retail centres and industrial property in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Caitlin – My best friend Hannah was dating a sailor named Will during The America’s Cup and Will asked if we both wanted to watch the racing. I had my eye on Andrew right away but thought he was there with one of the other girls. After texting Hannah “Is he single?” we found out that he was! I thought Andrew had the most amazing energy – he can make anyone smile.

Andrew —— I proposed at one of our favourite spots, Man O War at Waiheke, during a weekend’s sailing trip. We’d had a nice afternoon with a few wines and were heading back to the boat when I said I’d left my credit card at the bar. Reluctantly, Caitlin accompanied me back to shore to get it, only to see me on one knee proposing.

Funnily enough, Caitlin had looked at my pockets in the dinghy and had ruled out a proposal but hadn’t realised that I’d hid the ring in my pants. We had an almighty celebration with friends including a neighbouring boat letting a flare off which lead to a visit from the police!

Caitlin —— Our wedding was inspired by the surroundings at Andrew’s family home. We wanted to incorporate all the things we loved such as the dinghy Andrew proposed on which was filled with drinks, his father’s classic cars and wines made by people we know. My mother even played the bagpipes as we entered the reception. Being a designer, I wanted to create my absolute dream dress. I love classic slip dresses and elegant trains but saw this as a chance to create something really fun and playful. I ended up loving the dress so much I didn’t want to change out of it too early in the day so we came up with the idea of zipping off the front half to make it easier to walk in.

It’s not easy keeping 200m of fabric in place so we created tubes under the skirt and used plumber’s pipe to hold it up as normal wire wasn’t strong enough! The bridesmaids’ dresses were made from the first custom print I designed in collaboration with Liberty London. Our Summer ’23 range was inspired by the garden we got married in so that held a lot of meaning for me, having the girls wear that print by my side in different styles designed for them. I designed the boys’ suits in collaboration with Crane Brothers. We used Caitlin Crisp linen which was crafted into Andrew’s suit.
