Greyhounds as Pets, as stylish as it was purposeful.
In a week where fashion and culture converged on the runway, one show stood apart. The Greathounds charity presentation at New Zealand Fashion Week was more than a spectacle; it was a moving statement on style, community and compassion. For the first time, retired racing greyhounds took centre stage, styled by twelve of New Zealand’s most iconic fashion designers including Karen Walker, Sylvester, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Kowtow, Twenty Seven Names and Nom*D. These elegant dogs, dressed in bespoke creations, reminded audiences that fashion is not only about what we wear, but also about the narratives we champion.

The show arrives at a critical moment. With greyhound racing in Aotearoa set to be banned from August 2026 under the Racing Industry Amendment Act, more than 2,500 dogs are expected to retire in the next 15 months. It is the largest breed-specific rehoming effort the country has ever seen. To spotlight this challenge, Greyhounds as Pets, supported by Animates, created a show that was as stylish as it was purposeful.
Under the creative direction of Dan Ahwa, the runway became a platform for reinvention. “Art, design and compassion combine to create a moment that amplifies the need for New Zealanders to consider a greyhound as part of their everyday lives,” he explained. With striking choreography, moody lighting and clever styling, the dogs embodied dignity and quiet resilience, reframing long-held perceptions of the breed.
Designers responded in ways that were both witty and poignant. From playful references to the phrase “grey is the new black” to couture-level flourishes, each look captured the understated elegance of the dogs themselves. Margi Robertson of Nom*D, who has adopted a retired racer, reflected on their unique qualities: “Greyhounds are such gentle, soulful creatures. This initiative is about giving them the chance to be seen for the companions they truly are, beyond the track.”

The show’s impact lay in its ability to merge fashion’s love of theatre with a deeply humane cause. In a moment when the industry is increasingly called upon to demonstrate relevance beyond the runway, Greathounds offered a fresh perspective: that style can drive social change, and that beauty and empathy need not be mutually exclusive.
As the models left the runway, the message was clear. These dogs are not just retired racers; they are companions waiting to transform homes with loyalty, calm and affection. Fashion week is about discovery, and this season’s most unforgettable find may well be a new best friend.
