A playful yet polished meeting of worlds.
High-voltage from the very first moment, Life with Obstacles saw Karen Walker and adidas transform the New Zealand Fashion Week runway into a charged arena of movement, design and attitude. This was no ordinary catwalk but a spectacle that fused performance with fashion, proving what happens when two cultural icons meet at full force.

The show opened to the full track of Belle and Sebastian’s “The Stars of Track & Field”, as a model jogged on a treadmill in perfect time with the song’s slow build. Anticipation mounted, then burst into pure adrenaline as the runway transformed into a spectacle of movement. Models sprinted, hurdled and vaulted obstacles. The atmosphere was electric, each look heightened by motion.

The show was a playful yet polished meeting of worlds. Walker’s unmistakable wit and refined tailoring collided with adidas’ athletic edge, creating looks that felt effortless, modern and alive. This was fashion with stamina: confident silhouettes, clever detailing and a street-sport sensibility that speaks directly to how we dress now, when high fashion and high performance are no longer separate conversations.

Casting gave the show an extra charge, blending athletic power with cultural nostalgia. Olympic medallist Sarah Hirini commanded the runway with unstoppable force, Les Mills trainers brought fitness to the fore, and Finnish hobby horse champion Ada Filppa added a surreal twist. There were also triumphant returns: Anna Reeve, back 22 years after first walking for Walker, and Lorraine Downes, reconnecting with the designer three decades on. Stunt performer Catherine Coker closed with raw dynamism, underscoring the fearless spirit of the presentation.

Karen Walker and adidas did not just stage a runway; they staged a reminder: style and sport are both about pushing limits. With Life with Obstacles, these two icons proved that obstacles are not barriers; they are opportunities to create something unforgettable.
