Instrumental at New Zealand Fashion Week
Zambesi has always stood at the sharp edge of New Zealand fashion, and its latest collection, Instrumental, proved once again why the label commands cult-like reverence. Presented at New Zealand Fashion Week in collaboration with Shark Beauty, the show unfolded as a meditation on independence, innocence, and intensity, shadowed by the stillness of nature.

The runway itself was an immersive experience, enveloped in moody lighting and atmosphere that heightened the drama of the clothes. Fabrications draped fluidly in motion, set against moments of exceptional tailoring that cut sharp and precise lines. The collection was rich in texture, with lace, beading, satin, and silks layered against Zambesi’s trademark architectural shapes. This dialogue between softness and structure was compelling, elevating the work into something both visceral and refined.

The colour palette stayed restrained and wearable, anchored in earthy tones and monochromes, with injections of pink, green and clean white. This restraint gave space for the fabric and craftsmanship to speak, creating pieces that feel timeless yet modern.

Undone hair with a saltwater edge underscored the show’s ethereal mood, evoking midnight swims and the kind of summer abandon that lingers long after the season fades. Set to a shifting soundtrack of defiance, vulnerability, and reverence, the presentation became more than a showcase; it was a state of being.

For those with weddings or occasions on the horizon, Instrumental holds undeniable appeal. There is plenty here for the fashion-forward bride, her maids, and guests alike: silks that glide, lace that reveals and conceals, tailoring that asserts, and textures that whisper of ceremony and celebration.

In a season where fashion often seeks spectacle, Zambesi chose instead to create something cool, immersive, and quietly radical.
