GULP: Skin, Without the Extras
Ashleigh Scott knows skin. She has spent her career working with it, first in New Zealand, then as a facialist in London, before returning home and founding The Facialist in 2014. More than a decade later, The Facialist has become one of Auckland’s most established skin destinations, known for its holistic approach and highly personalised treatments. GULP feels less like a beauty entrepreneur deciding to launch a skincare brand and more like the culmination of thousands of hours spent looking closely at what real skin actually needs.
And it looks very good on the bathroom shelf.

The packaging immediately sets GULP apart. Deep chocolate brown bottles and tubes are paired with fine electric-blue typography and beautifully graphic cream boxes. It’s restrained but not predictable, with an almost fashion-like confidence to the identity. Even the pale blue tissue paper feels considered. In a skincare landscape awash with clinical white and muted neutrals, the brown feels rich, modern and refreshingly distinctive.
Inside, Ashleigh has been equally considered about what earns its place. GULP describes its formulations as natural, naturally derived or nature-identical, with no fillers and no “fragrance engineering”. The philosophy is uncomplicated: hydration first, everything else follows. Ashleigh says the idea grew from conversations she found herself having repeatedly in the treatment room, eventually leading her to formulate the products she wanted her clients to use.

There is a full routine rather than a minimalist handful. Melt ($69) is a balancing cleansing oil, Bounce ($59) an enzyme jelly cleanser, Super Skin Serum ($89) a plumping and hydrating serum, Cloud Creme ($85) a prebiotic moisturiser and Glow ($65) a nourishing facial oil. The five core products are available as The Complete Ritual for $367, while newer additions include Pillow and After Hours.
For Together Journal readers, particularly those thinking about their skin in the months before a wedding or significant event, it’s Ashleigh’s experience that gives GULP credibility. This is a range developed by someone who has spent years working directly with different skin types and concerns, rather than approaching skincare purely from the product side.
But perhaps what we like most is that GULP has personality. From its bold name and beautiful brown bottles to its ingredient philosophy, it feels confident about what it is, and equally confident about what it has chosen to leave out.
