Into the Blue: Jo Malone London Sea Salt & Bergamot

A fresh, mineral-rich fragrance inspired by wild waters, coastal air and the art of layering.

As a long-time devotee of Jo Malone London‘s Wood Sage & Sea Salt, I had high expectations for Sea Salt & Bergamot. I suspected it might find its way quickly to the top of my fragrance shelf. It has.

The newest addition to the Jo Malone London collection takes the coastal world of Wood Sage & Sea Salt and moves it from the shoreline into the water. Created with perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui, Sea Salt & Bergamot is inspired by the wild waters of the Celtic Sea and the invigorating experience of plunging into cold, mineral-rich surf.

The composition is wonderfully uncomplicated. Bergamot sits at the top, bringing the bright citrus freshness I immediately loved. Sea salt forms the heart, while driftwood anchors the base, introducing a light woodiness and warmth beneath the freshness. It has that particular Jo Malone London ability to be distinctive without feeling overpowering.

For me, it’s the balance that makes it so wearable. It feels clean and fresh without being overtly summery, with the brightness of the bergamot giving way to something woody and quietly grounded. It’s a fragrance I would happily wear every day, but equally trust to take me through to evening.

Perhaps I’m predisposed to love the story behind it, too. As an ocean lover, everything about the inspiration resonates with me: wild water, salt, movement and that exhilarating feeling of being immersed in the sea. There’s also a lovely gender-neutral quality to it. I would wear it myself, but could just as easily imagine it on my husband. Jo Malone London has designed it to be worn alone or layered, suggesting Silver Birch & Lavender as a pairing for a cooler, more aromatic interpretation.

I was fortunate to experience Sea Salt & Bergamot at its beautiful New Zealand launch, and the setting brought the fragrance story to life in such a considered way. Long tables were set against expansive views across Auckland and towards the water, surrounded by a landscape of grasses that gave the space an almost coastal quality. The tables themselves were restrained and beautifully detailed, with sculptural arrangements of white and soft green flowers, tall calla lilies and grasses, fresh citrus scattered amongst the place settings, pale blue menus and Jo Malone London‘s signature cream boxes tied in black ribbon.

There was something particularly clever about the styling. Rather than interpreting the ocean literally, the references were subtle: the movement of the grasses, mineral tones, touches of citrus, shells and organic forms. Even the flowers seemed to have the looseness and movement of something shaped by a coastal breeze. Jo Malone London candles sat amongst the arrangements, bringing fragrance into the tablescape itself. It felt fresh, modern and unmistakably aligned with the world of the new cologne.

For a wedding and occasion audience, that relationship between scent, setting and memory is particularly interesting. Fragrance has an extraordinary ability to return you to a place or moment, which is why choosing a scent around a wedding can feel so personal. Sea Salt & Bergamot has enough presence to mark an occasion without feeling conventionally romantic or overtly floral, and importantly, it’s something you can continue wearing long after the event itself.

The launch was a beautiful introduction to the fragrance in New Zealand, but ultimately it’s what happened afterwards that says the most. Sea Salt & Bergamot has gone straight to the top of my fragrance shelf and firmly into everyday rotation. Just as I suspected it would.
