Miro + MacKenzie by Ash Muir

Ultimately, we wanted our wedding to feel like us, not contrived or influenced by what a wedding ‘should’ be. It’s easy to see weddings on Instagram and think that you need to tick every box and have every single detail perfect to make it a special day, but that’s just not true!

Miro ——We’re two peas in a pod. We both grew up in Tauranga, though our paths never crossed. We moved to Auckland for uni, dropped out of our original degrees, ended up workng in fashion and now work in the same office! Mac is a footwear designer and I’m a footwear buyer.

Mac ——Miro stuck out like a sore thumb, in the best way possible, at uni. He was always himself, which is rare when you’re 18 and everyone is desperately trying to fit in. He has a calm energy and makes me feel at ease with myself, too. I felt instantly drawn to his authenticity. About two weeks after we started hanging out, we were having a wine after our accounting exam and I knew two things that night: that I loved Miro and that I didn’t want to continue with my commerce degree! We’ve been inseparable ever since.

Miro ——We always knew we wanted to get married because we love celebrating and making a big deal of the good things in life. I had the ring designed in June 2020 but had to wait until December for Mac to finish study, as she always said she didn’t want to get married while she was still a student. We were at an Airbnb and I got down on one knee and started uncontrollably sobbing. She thought something was wrong and then she saw the ring and she started crying too!

Mac ——We’re both laid-back so wanted our wedding to feel relaxed and intimate. We didn’t want to get married in summer as we aren’t big fans of the heat but knew we wanted to have it at Mudbrick as that’s where Miro took me for my birthday and also where we celebrated our engagement. Ultimately, we wanted our wedding to feel like us, not contrived or influenced by what a wedding ‘should’ be. It’s easy to see weddings on Instagram and think that you need to tick every box and have every single detail perfect to make it a special day, but that’s just not true!

Miro ——Food and outfits are two of our greatest joys in life so they were the two things we wanted to compromise on as little as possible.

Mac ——I have a degree in fashion and have a strong idea of what I like and don’t like. I wanted a dress that didn’t feel classically ‘wedding’ but that also had the drama of a wedding dress, which made for a difficult hunt. I have a Benjamin Alexander dress from my graduation that I love so I asked him to design a wedding interpretation of that dress.

Miro ——At the reception, my mother presented us with two beautiful Māori cloaks she had woven, one she made during her course a couple of years back and one that was a wedding gift for us. This is now framed on our wall. It’s such a beautiful family heirloom and a reminder of our wedding day.
