Q&A with James of Sanders Jewellers

We recently spoke with James of Sanders Jewellers to hear a little more about the jewellery house and its story. James shared with us the brand’s history, what distinguishes them from other jewellery houses, and his thoughts on the emerging trends in jewellery. Continue reading below for more…

Initially founded in 1992, Sanders Jewellers is known to specialise in working alongside its clients to create bespoke custom, one-off pieces with its onsite jeweller.

What is the history of Sanders Jewellers and how did it come about?

Sanders Jewellers is a family run business.  Mark and Cheryl Sanders established their first Auckland retail shop Sanders of St. Heliers 30 years ago and 2 years later their store Sanders of Remuera. Previous to opening the retail stores Mark and Cheryl operated a manufacturing/wholesale jewellery company for 10 years. Today they both work in the stores with their son James Sanders.

What distinguishes Sanders Jewellers and your style?

At Sanders Jewellers we try to have jewellery that is a little unique and of the best quality. We are often told that our collection is beautiful and we hear “we looked overseas and have found what we wanted at Sanders”. We love to help our clients with making their dream piece of jewellery and believe we offer a service second to none.

Do you have a favourite piece of jewellery that you have made, tell us a little about it?

We have so many favourite pieces! One however was a beautiful emerald and diamond ring. The emerald was a Zambian Emerald Cut stone of amazing colour totalling 3.48ct with two baguette diamonds either side totalling .78ct set in 18ct white gold.

Where do you see engagement ring trends heading?

We are seeing a trend towards yellow gold as against white gold/platinum. We also see a bit of a trend towards colour stones with diamonds rather than the traditional all diamond engagement ring.

If there is one piece of advice you could give to someone buying a ring, what would it be?

Jewellery is a very personal purchase and you must absolutely love the piece you buy.
