Renee & David by Morgan Roberts

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship … David and I have been together for almost 10 years and he popped the question on Christmas Day in 2016.

I am a Sales and Marketing Director and David worked in construction as a supervisor. Together we have renovated 2 houses and onto our 3rd. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs. We are the real deal, when we met, we decided we would just be together from that day on. It was love at first sight (after 4 years of messaging via social media and many unsuccessful meet ups). When you know and know, our relationship has been solid as a rock and continues to be, especially since the birth of our daughter in June this year (yes, fast turn around from the wedding!). Our relationship is solid because we know where we both stand. We know the parts that we play as individuals, we’re strong as individuals but together as a couple we’re even stronger.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…

We have attended our fair share of weddings and often found them a bit boring. Often stuck next to someone you don’t know, making small talk for hours on end. When we started to plan our wedding, we wanted it to be done our own way. We wanted to have a party, in an idyllic location that we could extend our time and enjoy the company of our family and friends over a few days. We also wanted an informal setting so we could talk with everyone. We also felt that it was more personal having our dear friend officiate the wedding. There’s nothing better than having someone incredibly close to you as a couple prepare words that are authentic, heartfelt and in our case hilarious. We got the legals out of the way earlier in the year with a celebrant, our parents under a one hundred year old fig tree in our backyard.

What we loved the most about our wedding was that we didn’t have a run sheet. We had the ceremony as the only formal thing of the day and it was up to us to enjoy the rest of the night with our nearest and dearest.

We had an open bar, great music and everyone had a great time (which you could tell by the photobooth pics at the end of the night)

Tell us about your main outfits: I wore a gown by Made with Love – I had eyed off this dress from the first time I saw it. It was the only dress that I tried on. I went to the fitting with my mum and mother in law and as soon as I put it on, I didn’t have to look anymore.

We wanted to keep David on the casual side (he’s not a tux type of guy!), but still smart. He is dressed by Politix and everything fitted perfectly. My best friend who did the florals made a boutonniere just in case last minute he felt like he wanted one and he ended up wearing it – it finished off his look perfectly.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day? Everything! We just had the best time. David was opposed to anything “wedding” but I managed to creep a few things in… like a first dance! If you knew David, dancing is probably his worst nightmare, but if you know me… I am the one starting the dancefloor. I requested my wedding singer, the incredibly talented Saia Latu to do a rendition of “Let’s Get Married” by Jagged Edge. I got him to do a slow version which would then drop into the remix after the first 2 verses. I dragged David out on the dance floor and we manged a slow 2-step (I led of course) He went along with it and we got some incredible shots from that moment and I will never forget it. Then as soon as the beat dropped everyone joined in (David scurried away) and then we all danced until midnight.

The other cool thing is that we took a little tinny to a little isle to have our portraits done. Not so glamorous with the salt spray and the wind, but the photos turned out amazing and they were very “us”.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together? Throw out the rule book, do what you want to do. Feel free to create your day as you imagine it. That’s what we did. We really enjoyed ourselves and I know our guests did to. I remember waking up the next day wanting to have done it all again. I still look back at that day and feel like it was the best night of our lives. We had the best fun and that’s what its all about.
