Better Together: The sans [ceuticals] Duo Rethinking Hair Repair
Colour, bleach, heat, sunshine, salt water and an enthusiastic relationship with the straightener. We ask rather a lot of our hair. New Zealand beauty brand sans [ceuticals] has answered with two clever treatments that approach the problem from different directions, and make particularly good sense when used together.
Re-Bond + Seal Hair Treatment 2.0 is the repairer. pH + Shine Corrector is the finishing act. One works within the hair fibre, the other focuses on the surface. Think repair within, polish without.
It’s an intelligent pairing from a brand founded by Auckland hairdresser and beauty entrepreneur Lucy Vincent, whose professional background gives the move into sophisticated hair repair particular relevance. Since launching sans [ceuticals] in 2009, Vincent has built the brand around a philosophy of doing more with less, creating highly active, multifunctional formulations with a beautifully restrained approach to both product and design.
Re-Bond + Seal enters the increasingly busy bond-repair conversation with an interesting point of difference. While much of the category focuses on disulphide bonds, sans [ceuticals] says its biomimetic peptide technology targets hydrogen and ionic bonds, penetrating the hair cortex and forming new links within areas of damage. In simpler terms, it is designed to reinforce some of the tiny weaknesses created by colouring, bleaching, chemical processing and heat styling.
The brand reports that in vitro testing showed a 36 per cent increase in the strength of chemically damaged hair after six applications. It’s a laboratory result rather than a large independent clinical trial, but an interesting one. The formula also brings in pro-vitamin B5, squalane, coconut oil, wheat-derived extracts and proteins, vitamin E and camellia seed oil, and has been developed with everything from fine and fragile hair to chemically or keratin-treated lengths in mind.
Then comes pH + Shine Corrector, and this is where the partnership gets particularly clever.
Rather than adding a superficial layer of gloss, this five-in-one acidic treatment is designed to help restore the hair’s pH, remove mineral build-up and encourage the outer cuticle to lie flatter. A smoother surface reflects light more evenly, meaning shine becomes the visible result of healthier-looking, better-behaved hair rather than something simply sprayed on top.
At the heart of the formula are fermented apple enzymes, used to help lower the hair’s pH while dissolving mineral deposits associated with hard water and chlorine. Pro-vitamin B5 supports moisture retention and contributes to smoothness and luminosity. It is particularly interesting for coloured hair, brittle blondes and frizz-prone or dull lengths, but also for that peculiar situation where freshly washed hair somehow still doesn’t feel entirely fresh.
Together, the logic is beautifully simple. Re-Bond + Seal works on the internal structure of damaged hair, while pH + Shine Corrector addresses the exterior, helping smooth and seal the cuticle once the work inside has been done. Rather than two treatments competing for space in the shower, they complete different parts of the same job.
For brides, the pairing also makes a convincing case for treating hair preparation a little more like skincare. We happily plan facials and complexion routines months before a wedding, while simultaneously asking our hair to endure highlights, toners, styling trials, blow waves and increasingly frequent encounters with hot tools. Starting a considered repair routine well ahead of the day makes rather more sense than reaching desperately for a mask the night before.
The pH element has particular appeal for destination weddings and honeymoons too, where swimming pools, unfamiliar water and plenty of sun and styling can quickly take the shine off otherwise happy holiday hair.
There is some serious science sitting inside those beautifully minimal sans [ceuticals] bottles, but the idea behind this duo is refreshingly straightforward: strengthen what’s happening inside the strand, then smooth and seal what’s happening outside it.
