Tabatha + Jack by Briars Atlas

I thought, oh no he isn’t proposing because why wouldn’t my best friend be there….. well, I walk into the restaurant, and they take me upstairs and our song was playing and all my friends and family were there with the final clue and a sign that said “just say Yes!”

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love,
Tabby: My name is Tabby, and I work as a science teacher in a children’s museum in Sydney. I am a loud, over bubbly Italian from Cronulla, I love teaching and eating! We are two crazy nerds that meet in this whacky world.
Jack: My name’s Jack and I work in banking for Westpac. I am a quiet film buff and advocate for all things animated!

When did you first realise that this was someone, you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
Tabby: Three months into dating I bought him a small cologne and I was so nervous giving it to him because I thought what if he thinks it’s too soon. But he walked in that night and had bought me firefly on DVD and Cadbury chocolate and know then, he was the one.

Jack: I had to move to Japan. We did long distance and even though Japan was my dream, I felt like she
was missing from my life. So a year later, I packed my stuff up and moved back home to be with her.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
Ohhhhh baby where do I start: it was a treasure hunt/clues. The first one took me to meet my bestie to get my nails done, then hair and makeup, so at this point, I am like OMG it’s happening… then he takes me shopping, then back home, and this is where I start doubting because……. he makes me GET IN PJ’S in full makeup and hair and I had to do trivia to find out what movie to watch which was my fav movie, The Birdcage!

After an hour, he disappeared and on the chair was a dress my nonna made for me and a clue that says I’ll meet you in our special place. My friend came and picked me up and said she had a date and dropped me at our fav French restaurant. And I watched her get in a car with a guy. I thought, oh no he isn’t proposing because why wouldn’t my best friend be there….. well, I walk into the restaurant, and they take me upstairs and our song was playing and all my friends and family were there with the final clue and a sign that said “just say Yes!”

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
I have a musical theatre background and I didn’t want the traditional Italian church wedding; we wanted a show where people could eat popcorn and watch the next stage of our lives unfold. We wanted different, dramatic, Gatsby and a touch of art deco.

It was very important for us to use providers that were art based and smaller companies. We wanted our providers to be excited as us and we were not disappointed!

We love books so we asked all our guests to bring their favourite books and we had a bookshelf at a ceremony. Our guests’ gifts on the table were a ‘blind date with a book’, one of the first gifts Jack ever bought me in Newtown. When we got married, we had to have a portrait of our cat Luna there with us. We collect pins from places we go and things we loved so my husband custom made some for our wedding day. We had a cannoli cart at our wedding to tie in the Italian culture. As a surprise at our wedding, we had cancer council pins at every table and we made a donation for every supplier and guest that we worked with and that attended the wedding. We got married on the stage while our family watched in the audience and ate popcorn and drank! We did a Bridgeton style first dance which was actually pretty cool.

I let the suppliers do their thing! I hate micro managing and believe that when you let suppliers follow their passion, you get outstanding results. Eg: our wedding cake – I had no idea what would show up on the day. I just said to everyone “do something you have never done.”

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
Entertainment and photo video! We had a full jazz band with the most amazing singers, all night was just amazing. All our entertainment people still talk to me about 6 months later!

But the best money I have ever spent was on my Photographer and videographer, Oli and Luke. They
went above and beyond in every way! They never stopped and the picture and video were so important for me because honestly the day went so fast!

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?
I bought my wedding dress before I was engaged. My husband told me “this year’s the year…” so I know. But I had been planning this day from the womb so I always pictured the typical long sleeve Wog wedding dress. Well, things changed when one day during lockdown I saw it. Me and my mum stopped in our tracks and there it was…the sparkle princess dress…the dress from my Disney dreams.

We bought it and every week, my nonna would walk all the way down there and pay it off bit by bit. But we soon realised that big dress meant big problems and dresses are HEAVY (25kg. I fainted after the ceremony. The pics of me with my head on my husband’s lap, that’s me unable to stand lol) so we got a second fun pink dress to add a pop of colour to the night!
