Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
We’re a couple of creative air signs. Chris, a Gemini, works for a boutique guitar amp builder and plays guitar on the side. Sara, a Libra, is an art director and graphic designer. We live, work and play in San Francisco. We love riding our bikes, specifically to the farmer’s market. We love a well-crafted meal, going to shows and having a sit and giggle with our pals.
How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
We met in front of a bar in San Francisco called The Page. Chris was just coming from a show with Avi, who is an old friend of Sara’s, and Sara was on her way to a date with a different guitar player who would soon become insignificant. A second chance encounter with a different mutual friend led to an impromptu date on a beautiful Spring Sunday.
What styling and visual elements worked best for you? (could be things, the florals, particular hire products or your marquee, etc., something the stylist created or simply just the scenic beauty of your location or the existing design of your venue).
The flowers in our ceremony were probably the most special. We wanted them to fill the space with rich colour, but also feel airy. Our florist totally nailed it. They also had the challenge of incorporating Sara’s mom’s veil in the hoop, which they did beautifully, and Chris still talks about how much he loved his boutonniere. The scenic beauty was the star of the show, though. We planned the wedding around a full moon, which lit up the mountains and cactus around our venue and felt super romantic.
What did you enjoy most about the planning process, and do you have any tips for couples starting their wedding planning journey?
Wedding planning can be stressful, and it can bring up a lot of stuff that you don’t know if you’re ready for, but with each step of planning, you get to picture all these important people in your life coming to celebrate you and your favourite person in the whole world.
Tell us about your vendors. Were there any standout suppliers you would like to make special mention of?
Honestly, every one of our vendors was a standout. Chef Alberto put together a meal our guests still talk about; the florists worked with us to create the otherworldly floral scapes. Our photographer, Jose Pablo, felt like a friend who just so happened to be taking photos of you, and our Videographers captured our special day beautifully, and I kept forgetting they were even there. Also, our planners Jana and Sydney really went out of their way to help us bring this destination wedding/intimate musical festival come to life.
Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, and is there a story?
The night of the welcome party, Sara wore her mom’s wedding dress from 1979 that she had altered into a top. We also used her veil as the fabric for our chuppah.
Tell us about your wedding and engagement rings.
Sara wanted 2 things for her engagement ring: she wanted Emeralds and to be surprised, and Chris delivered. We looked at adding a stacker with a wedding band, but the Engagement ring is such a gorgeous piece alone; we felt like it was putting a hat on a hat and just opted to make the Engagement ring the wedding ring. Chris’s ring is a vintage find from Etsy. It’s a Citrine Sapphire, and we just thought it was beautiful and looked perfect on Chris.
Was there a favourite moment (or two) that you will treasure always?
The first look definitely replays in both our minds often. We love remembering our ceremony, seeing each other in this way surrounded by a backdrop of clouds made of flowers and all of our favourite people and colours.
What does being married mean to you, and are there any special rituals you have that you would like to share?
We were together 8 years before we got married, and didn’t think we’d feel any different. Somehow it’s brought us even closer. Planning a wedding and going through the wedding rituals gave us more reverence for each other than we really thought was possible. We’re still having fun with each other, still learning with and about each other. Marriage gave us that foundation to root down so we could continue to grow together.
