Cass + Sam by Rachel Artime Photo

Sam and I met at uni – we were both studying Communication Design at RMIT in Melbourne. I was in my first year; Sam was in his third.

We were both guilted into going to a drinks night that was organised for the 1st year to meet everyone else in our course. We found each other at a large group table that got smaller and smaller until we were the only two still talking – about the music of course.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Cassie: I’m Cassie, an interior/prop/event stylist. I’m the reason our house is filled with plants, pastel knick-knacks and a prop cupboard that’s bigger than our actual crockery drawer. I’m at my happiest when I’m fawning over furniture we can’t afford at Hay, watching a Wes Anderson film or drinking an amaretto sour at our favourite cocktail bar in Potts Point.

Sam: I’m Sam; I’m a Creative Director in Advertising. I like cooking pasta recipes my mum taught me, anything that comes in International Klein Blue, and starting every day by planting a big kiss on the snoot of our border collie Basil – whether he likes it or not. I’m currently learning the Cello, it’s not going well, but I’m optimistic.

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

Get ready for a lame, unsatisfying, yet honest answer. Literally the first time we hung out. We both just knew.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
Okay, this is pretty epic.. Sam and I have lived in Melbourne our whole lives and at the start of 2020, we decided to move to Sydney for work. Over dinner one night, I suggested rather than your classic going-away-drinks-at-the-pub, we should do something special. Finally, being out of lockdown made any event feel like a good excuse for a party. Before I could finish my sentence, Sam told me he’d already emailed somewhere. I was pretty puzzled because I’m definitely the organiser in our relationship, so when Sam told me he’d already emailed The Walsh Street House by Robin Boyd, I knew something was up. I sneakily rang my best friend as soon as we got home and started the conversation with, ‘You might already know about this, and you’re going to have to act like you don’t, but I think Sam’s going to propose…’. Turns out she did know and was helping Sam with the ring!

Fast forward to the party – we told everyone to get dressed to the nines (it only feels right when you’re in the Walsh Street House) bought a shit tonne of booze, I did the flowers, and we curated the perfect playlist of 1960s jazz and French pop to match the time period the house was built. We gathered everyone on the upstairs mezzanine for a few words. Sam pauses at the end of his thank you speech and after 11 years, drops to one knee. I told Sam years earlier that if he ever proposed that the ring had to be in a Mrs Box. As soon as I saw his sister pull out that gorgeous, pale blue velvet box, my jaw dropped and stayed dropped for the next 5 minutes.

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
When describing a wedding people usually reach for words like – elegant, rustic, traditional. But being design dorks slash millennials who know deep down they’ll never own a home, our descriptors (maybe subconsciously) ended up a bit ‘Architectural Digest’: Mid-century, brutalist, minimal, contemporary. This may seem weird but actually helped us pick everything from the iconic venue to the dress. As the saying goes “Cant afford your dream home? channel all your unrequited architectural energy into planning your wedding” Right guys?
