Erin + Karl by Carla Mitchell

Erin– I’m the digital and deputy editor for Remix Magazine, as well as a freelance copywriter. My passion is translating people and their stories onto the page. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing your words published!

Karl– I am a Commercial Lead for Zuru, working across the toys portfolio. Outside of work, you’ll find me either travelling (when possible), with friends, or eating our way through Auckland. Erin and I are both massive foodies.

Erin–Karl and I met at uni through mutual friends eight years ago. Our relationship grew so organically, then without realising, I couldn’t imagine my life without him. He feels like home. In my vows, I said, ‘I had butterflies from the get-go, and to this day they’re still there.’ I see him every day, yet I’m still just as excited to be with him.

Karl– Erin was on my radar for a while before we actually started dating. I’d seen her through mutual friends and eventually convinced her to have a date with me. No matter how long we spend together, it’s never boring.

Erin–Karl proposed in Queenstown which has always been our special place. We went to Amisfield for dinner and as soon as he got there he started to get the sweats and was noticeably fidgety. He sped through the wine tasting like it was water. Then a couple of bathroom breaks later, he asked me for a walk around the vines and then he was down on one knee!

When it came to planning the wedding, neither of us is the best with details so it was really important to find a venue that was passionate about taking care of the little things. Our only brief for the Winehouse was FUN. Our friends and family know we love to party, so we wanted to make sure we delivered. The Winehouse team was amazing.

My dad forgot the bridal bouquet. He left it at our place! But I was just so excited to walk down the aisle, it really didn’t matter. My maid of honour gave me her bouquet, and no one actually noticed. It’s crazy how caught up you can get in planning every little detail, then something like that happens and it is what it is!

Karl– We booked a helicopter for mountain photos. I think we had quite a romantic idea of the experience, but it was SO cold. The helicopter pilot said the gusts were some of the worst he’d seen. Erin hopped out of the helicopter and just sunk knee-deep into the snow and her dress was soaked. If you look close enough at those snaps, she’s saying “I’m DONE up here”. It’s funny now, looking back. And the photos were incredible!

Erin– I ended up going for a bespoke Hera Couture gown. Quite the opposite of the simple non-bridal dress I’d planned, but it was so special. I never thought I’d be that bride who would be sentimental about her dress but I I’ll treasure it forever.

Karl– A special detail of my outfit was the dachshund cufflinks we sourced online. We have three family sausage dogs who sadly couldn’t make the flight to Queenstown so having them there in a way was super special.
