Eva: We met at high school in Australia, at a photo shoot for a theatre production. I was directed to put my hand on Sam’s chest, and eight years later, here we are…
We’ve recently moved to Vancouver for the next chapter of our lives. Photography is a hobby of ours, so we’re looking forward to spending time in nature and walking slowly through the city, exploring our new home. It was a joint decision to get married. We chose my engagement ring together and the proposal itself was at home, right before we went to bed; we were together, safe and happy.
We didn’t set constraints or have a hard plan for our day – we got there and let things happen, which turned out to be the best idea. The wedding itself was just a moment during an incredible weekend with friends. We’d rented a house outside Inverness in Scotland for a few days, with the intention to be merry with those who had become family in the past few years. Sam cooked for everyone; our friend James, the London 2017 Coffee Masters champion, supplied coffee; our friend Magda is conveniently a florist; we discovered Sam’s younger sister Lucie can make a delicious wedding cake out of whatever’s left in the fridge after a long weekend; and our wedding styling was taken care of by where we were – by nature and the beautiful amber glow of whisky. There are lots of memories that have stuck with us. I popped my head around the corner after finishing my hair and makeup to see James carefully steaming my wedding dress, which was such a lovely moment. Lucie surprised us on the loch after our ceremony, singing ‘Moon River’ accompanied by Brody on guitar.
What I love about our wedding photos is that they really capture the spirit of the weekend – we just happened to be wearing beautiful clothing instead of hiking boots. I’ve always loved Alexander McQueen’s style and vision and happened to stumble across a dress with a description that matched the setting we were in, inspired by the Lady of the Lake and women of Camelot. Sam found a jacket from Timothy Everest that he loved early on. He somehow got to Inverness without a dress shirt or trousers to wear with it, but thankfully Burberry has next-day delivery to anywhere in the UK!
Sam and I have grown up together. We trust each other and go to great lengths to support each other. Being married feels different, for sure – it was meaningful to formally commit ourselves to one another. Being married doesn’t change how much we love each other, but it’s nice to call ourselves husband and wife.
