How did you get started in the wedding tipi rental business, and what inspired you to focus on such a unique offering for weddings?
Living in the UK, we frequently saw incredible tipi marquees at weddings and events and knew they would be magical in New Zealand. When the time was right, we returned home and invested everything we had into three tipis. It was a huge risk, but we believed in their charm and how perfectly they fit into New Zealand’s landscapes. Nearly a decade later, we have eight tipis and sailcloth tents and couldn’t be happier with the journey. Taking that leap was absolutely worth it!
What makes tipis such a special and popular choice for weddings, and how do they differ from traditional marquee setups?
Tipis offer something truly special with their natural canvas, wooden poles, and earthy aesthetic. They create an unmatched ambiance and a relaxed atmosphere. Unlike traditional marquees, our tipis can be connected in various configurations, giving them unique versatility and charm.
How do you collaborate with couples and other vendors to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere inside and around your tipis? Do you have any favorite décor ideas or setups?
We adore creating memorable spaces, whether it’s with bold floral installations, dramatic lighting, or our favourite trend—disco balls (the more, the better!). That said, sometimes simplicity is key; a paired-back setup lets the tipi’s magic shine. We collaborate closely with couples and vendors to ensure every detail reflects their vision and creates a space that feels uniquely them.
Have you noticed any recent trends in outdoor weddings or tipi setups? How have you adapted your rental offerings to meet these new demands?
Outdoor dining is hugely popular, and having a tipi on-site offers flexibility—a perfect Plan B for weather challenges and a dance-ready space when the sun sets. We’ve also noticed a growing preference for combining sailcloth tents for dining with tipis for dancing. Festival-style setups and walk-and-fork catering remain top trends for that laid-back vibe tipis encapsulate so well.
Can you share a story of a memorable or challenging wedding where your tipis played a central role in making the event unforgettable?
Every wedding is special to us, but some stand out due to challenges that we’ve helped couples overcome. Recently, a spring wedding turned into a winter wonderland when snow unexpectedly blanketed the site. With fire pits and heating, we transformed the tipi into a cozy haven. Moments like these remind us of the resilience and joy in creating unforgettable memories for couples, even when the unexpected happens.
What exciting projects or plans do you have for Gather & Gold in the coming year? Are there any new directions you’re looking to explore in your business?
We’re always expanding our range of extra hire items to offer more options for our couples. While we plan to keep doing what we do best, we’re constantly on the lookout for innovative ways to enhance our offerings.
