Parnell is also becoming one of the most compelling places in Auckland to plan a wedding or celebration.
Leafy, elegant and steeped in history, Parnell has long been considered one of Auckland’s most desirable neighbourhoods. Yet for all its heritage, it remains a very contemporary part of the city. Grand old buildings and established gardens sit alongside some of Auckland’s most progressive fashion, food, beauty and design businesses, giving Parnell a character that feels both timeless and distinctly modern.
Sitting on the edge of the central city, within walking distance of the Britomart precinct and the waterfront, Parnell has an understated sophistication that has always been part of its appeal. Beautiful architecture, treelined streets, destination restaurants and cafés, galleries, boutiques and design studios create a neighbourhood that feels established and refined, but never static. Increasingly, it is also becoming one of the most compelling places in Auckland to plan a wedding or celebration.
We might be a little biased. Together Journal is based here, and Parnell is also home for us, so it is an area particularly close to our hearts. Spending so much time in the neighbourhood means we know just how much is tucked away behind its heritage façades and along its village-like streets. For couples planning a wedding, an extraordinary concentration of talented artisans and beautiful businesses is here, many within an easy stroll of one another.

And that is perhaps what makes Parnell so appealing. A wedding is never simply about the day itself. Months of decisions, appointments, fittings, celebrations, and rituals come beforehand, and couples increasingly want that experience to feel as considered and enjoyable as the wedding itself. In Parnell, much of it can happen within a few beautiful, walkable streets.
Jewellery is an obvious place to begin. Parnell has long been one of Auckland’s most important destinations for fine jewellery, with an impressive collection of established jewellers and independent specialists. Sutcliffe Jewellers brings exceptional craftsmanship and bespoke design to the precinct, while Graeme Thomson Antique Jewellery draws those seeking pieces with history and character. Orsini offers European-inspired fine jewellery alongside its own designs, while Hartfield Jewellers, Solitaire De Parnell and Godavari Diamonds add further depth to a neighbourhood where finding an engagement ring, wedding bands or a future heirloom can become an occasion in itself.

Bridal fashion is equally well represented. Fritz & Sarah’s Parnell atelier is known for beautifully constructed gowns that balance modernity with timelessness, while Natalie Rose now offers her own in-house bridal collection. For something entirely individual, Tango Vintage is a treasure trove of beautifully sourced vintage fashion and accessories, perfect for brides looking beyond traditional bridal.

The groom is certainly not an afterthought here either. Parnell has an enviable line-up of menswear and tailoring specialists, from the polished custom and ready-to-wear offering at Working Style to Dorset Suits, Payne Tailors and Frank Casey. Esque Atelier adds another contemporary name to the mix. Whether the brief calls for impeccable black tie, a beautifully cut classic suit, or something with a little more personality, expertise is close at hand.

Then there are all the details that bring a celebration to life. Grace & Flora creates expressive, contemporary florals from its beautiful Parnell studio, while Passion for Paper caters to those who still appreciate the tactile pleasure of beautiful stationery and paper goods. These elements make a wedding feel personal, and having such creative specialists in the neighbourhood makes the planning process even more enjoyable.

Beauty and wellbeing have also become an increasingly important part of the pre-wedding ritual, and Parnell has an exceptional collection in this space. HANA offers red-light therapy and infrared sauna in its considered wellness studio, while Endota Spa, Lanreé, ASC Salon and Parnell Beauty Bar provide everything from skin and beauty treatments to those all-important final appointments. Rather than thinking only about wedding-day hair and make-up, these are places to visit in the weeks and months beforehand, whether for skin preparation, hair, beauty, relaxation or simply a little time out from planning.
And, of course, you can celebrate here, too. Parnell’s collection of venues spans historic Auckland landmarks, intimate restaurants and some of the city’s most exciting contemporary spaces. One of the newest and most notable is Casabella, which has quickly become one of Auckland’s coolest event and wedding venues. Chic, modern and highly design-led, its interiors feel more like a beautiful New York showroom or downtown loft than a conventional wedding venue. Just a few doors down, Spanish restaurant Barulho offers catering for weddings and events across Auckland, and hosts intimate celebrations in its own space. Together, the two capture another side of contemporary Parnell, where great food, considered design and modern hospitality sit naturally alongside the neighbourhood’s rich heritage.

For couples drawn to history and architecture, Auckland Museum and Holy Trinity Cathedral offer grandeur and a remarkable sense of place. Cibo and Barulho bring together celebration, atmosphere and excellent food, while The Village Square and 269 Parnell add further possibilities for events of different styles and scales. Collectively, the offering makes it possible to find a setting that feels quintessentially Auckland or something altogether more unexpected.
Part of the pleasure, however, is everything that happens between the appointments. Parnell is made for lingering. There are beautiful cafés for a morning meeting, excellent restaurants for a long lunch, galleries and boutiques to wander through, including two of New Zealand’s finest destinations for books and paper goods, the iconic Passion for Paper and beautifully curated Lamplight Books. Add leafy streets lined with some of Auckland’s loveliest architecture, and a dress fitting or appointment with a jeweller can easily become an afternoon spent in the neighbourhood, perhaps followed by a glass of wine or dinner afterwards.
What we particularly love about Parnell is how these worlds overlap. You can meet your jeweller, walk to a dress fitting, stop for lunch, visit a florist and finish with a beauty treatment, without ever needing to leave the neighbourhood. It turns the practicalities of wedding planning into something altogether more pleasurable, a day spent wandering, discovering and enjoying one of Auckland’s most beautiful neighbourhoods.
For couples travelling from elsewhere in Auckland, around New Zealand or even overseas, that concentration of expertise is invaluable. Its position on the city fringe makes Parnell wonderfully accessible, while its leafy streets and village atmosphere give it a sense of escape from the pace of the CBD. Many of its designers and specialists also work with clients nationally and internationally, offering remote consultations, made-to-order services and appointments that can be coordinated around a visit to Auckland.
Weddings are made up of many moments, and not all of them happen on the wedding day. There is the first ring appointment, the dress fitting, choosing a suit, deciding on flowers, preparing your skin, finding the stationery, long lunches with family and friends, and all those small rituals that become part of the story of getting married.
For us, that is what makes Parnell such a natural wedding quarter. Historic yet forward-looking, established yet continually evolving, it brings together heritage, fashion, design, beauty, food and celebration in a way few other Auckland neighbourhoods can. It is not simply somewhere to hold a wedding. It is somewhere to experience all the lovely things that happen along the way.
