How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
Genevie: We worked together! I first found Jay a little rude, but only later I found out the he was actually extremely shy!
We met at work in Perth. We had a road trip for work and Genevie would make me coffee every morning because we were always the first 2 people awake. This was in Bunnbury (WA) November last year. We first really hung out at the work Christmas party in December at Trigg Beach where we spent the whole day together speaking some very drunk talk. That night Genevie went home and told her family she met her future husband and I told my parents all about her when I came to Darwin for Christmas. 8 months later, Trigg Beach is where we ended up getting engaged. Since then we spent a lot of our time exploring Perth together, finding many many bars, restaurants and other things to do. The future holds hopefully more pub crawls once the baby is here and older!
When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
We first clicked at our office Christmas party. Jay wasn’t as shy (he had a little liquid courage!) the whole evening we spent laughing at each other and making jokes. I had never connected with someone so easily. When I went home from the party, go to see my parents and at that night I told them “I met my future husband!”
Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
Yes there was, we went back to the beach where our work Christmas Party was, the Trigg Beach in WA. It was blowing wind wildly and Jay insisted we walk on the beach. Very reluctantly I agreed. I walked in front and I turned around and Jay was half down on a knee fumbling the ring because he was so nervous and asked me to marry him. Very fitting to how we are!
Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
We just wanted something more relaxed but special and different. Just like us! that is why we chose this cute little space in East Point Reserve, looks like a secret beach! Have this bush around formed as a gate, so we need to pass the “gate” to enter the beach/ cliff area. Everything else pretty relaxed, Genevie wasn’t even on her shoes the entire ceremony! But the most important, we surrounded by most of our dearest, small but intimate. The reception also very intimate, we booked a long table and the back garden of this cool bar in Darwin CBD called Stone House. We had lots of drinks, tapas and dance the night away!
What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
Definitely our photographer! We knew that this is something that holds value, we can look back for many many years to come. And Mel from Psealms Production was just so awesome! she even had umbrellas ready and it makes it even more special! And her vision – when it’s raining and we cancel our photoshoot around the beach area, she suggested to go to the city where we will have more shades. It works magically! We love our photos so much, so unique and beautiful in every way! And also the flower bouquet I got from Beija Flor Darwin! It’s elevate my whole look!
Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
The rain (from the start of the ceremony!) and we’re in the open area with no shade! and the fact that Genevie was 7 months pregnant!!
