Hannah + Henry by Na Lia Weddings

We wanted our wedding day to reflect us and be unique.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

We are 28 and 29 from Melbourne. Henry is a doctor and Hannah is a nurse/midwife. We love food and wine, outdoor adventures and travel. We’d been dating 6 years before we got married. Highlights of our relationship so far have been renovating our apartment together and getting our dog Humphrey who also walked down the aisle.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

We met through uni during a study day for trainee doctors and nurses. I (Henry) sat next to Hannah at the start of the day and we were partnered for an activity where we had to call each other so I sneakily had her phone number. I went home and worked up the courage to text her and ask her out. We went out that weekend for a rooftop drink in the city and felt like we’d known each other forever. We had an instant connection that we had both never felt before and we have been together ever since!

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood and style of your wedding. (theme, key styling elements, florals, colour palettes etc.).

Hannah described her vision as having ‘a fuck-tonne of flowers’ and giving our vendors full creative license (“I don’t mind what you do as long as it looks good”). We used baby blue throughout as we thought it looked so beautiful against the stone walls of the venue. We wanted our guests to be wowed but we also wanted the styling to be functional (we repurposed the flowers from the ceremony into the reception and then again the next day for our recovery). We wanted our wedding day to reflect us and be unique.

What styling and visual elements worked best for you? (could be things, the florals, particular hire products or your marquee, etc., something the stylist created or simply just the scenic beauty of your location or the existing design of your venue).

The stunning blank canvas of the Grand Hall at Provenance is so naturally beautiful. Adding florals into the space created a scene that felt very magical and emotional. Otherwise we wanted to let the space do the talking with simple linen table decoration and candles. We were so glad we chose to do a sweetheart table so that we could have some moments to share to ourselves during our wedding night.

What did you enjoy most about the planning process, and do you have any tips for couples starting their wedding planning journey?

Henry is a meticulous planner which helped as he was very organised and structured with the process. Hannah had the vision and ideas. Our tips would be to start early with a rough vision of what you want but to ultimately let your vendors do what they do best and create something that they think reflects you as a couple. Try not to be too stressed because it all comes together on the day. Equally we felt like all the small details add up and are appreciated by guests (i.e. thongs for the dance floor, water for the ceremony).

Tell us about your vendors. Were there any standout suppliers you would like to make special mention of?

They were all incredible: we felt so fortunate and honestly could not single out one person as they all went above and beyond for us. We picked vendors that had worked at Provenance before and this meant they all worked so well together. We felt like we had a genuine connection with every vendor and we were treated more like friends than clients.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, and is there a story?

We both just wanted to feel confident and the best versions of ourselves. Hannah went to so many dress shops and had the best experience at Mariana Hardwick where the team helped craft something tailored to her style and wishes. Henry wanted to feel like James Bond in a classic black tuxedo and Oscar Hunt were incredible in their whole process.

Tell us about your wedding and engagement rings.

Henry designed the engagement ring to be classic and elegant (to reflect his wife-to-be). Hannah’s wedding band is a bit more ‘bling’ but compliments her engagement ring perfectly. Henrys ring is a simple matching band to compliment the other rings.

What were one or two elements that were most important to you both that you were happy to spend a little more on? (food, photography, florals, the venue, your outfits?).

We ended up stretching the budget a little as we went as we truly appreciated the work of the vendors and wanted to ensure that they felt like they could show off their creativity. We had always said from the outset that we wouldn’t skimp on flowers, photography and videography and definitely do not regret this. Food was very important to us and Provenance were incredible: all our guests commented on the quality of the food and nobody left hungry.

Was there a favourite moment (or two) that you will treasure always?

It is hard to look past the first moment we saw each other as Hannah walked down the aisle. It was an incredibly emotional moment- we were both crying uncontrollably. We both always say how we will never forget that moment and feeling for the rest of our lives.
