When I dropped him home from our first date, there was something in the pit of my stomach telling me that he was a special kind of character and someone I could see myself having an amazing life with – and I was right because he still makes my cheeks hurt from laughter to this day.
Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Joel – I am a country boy at heart, but enjoy the fast past city lifestyle. I love being creative – whether it’s acting/performing, entertaining, working on my podcast or producing my national radio program. My family, friends and our little dog Storm provide me with a lot of happiness and laughter. I currently work as a Learning & Development Specialist & have my own business called “In Your Words – A Legacy of Love.”
Troy: I am Tasmanian born, who moved to the big smoke in my mid 20’s. I’m a fashion lover, you can find me listening to the Queens of R&B and my guilty pleasure is the Spice Girls. I fell into working in the Dog industry after getting our beautiful little bubwah Storm and have never been happier.
When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
Joel: Honestly, the spark I felt was instant – right from the very first date. I had never met anyone like Troy before. He made me laugh so much that my cheeks were hurting the next day. When I dropped him home from our first date, there was something in the pit of my stomach telling me that he was a special kind of character and someone I could see myself having an amazing life with – and I was right because he still makes my cheeks hurt from laughter to this day.
Troy: After our first date, I felt a spark that I’d never felt before. I could tell right away that something was different about Joel. We always had and continue to have the most fun together, I found myself not wanting to be anywhere else other than being around him which made me fall in love with him even more.
Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
Joel & Troy: Our vision changed so many times over our journey! We always wanted a fun, relaxed, chilled, happy vibe on the day – nothing traditional. A party-like atmosphere is something we had always envisaged, even though the day was about us & a celebration of our love, we truly wanted to thank those who had come on this crazy ride with us by making the day about our guests too. To see a full dance floor at the end of the night, people with shoes off, shirts undone and massive smiles on their faces meant we had achieved the inclusivity we so wanted.
What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
Joel & Troy: Our suits were the one thing we knew that we wanted to splurge on and felt everything else would fall into place around them and it did. We had custom suits made for the ceremony which Couture Suiting was amazing in pulling our idea together. Troy had a hand beaded jacket and Joel had the most amazing gold running through the cream jacket that sparkled subtly when the light hit it.
Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
Joel & Troy: This was our 5th attempt at getting married, our original date was 10/10/2020. What we planned in the beginning compared to what our day was on the 5th attempt was so different but so us and better than we ever thought it could be. We had to pivot and just deal with the situations thrown at us and we found a lot of strength from each other, even up until the Thursday before our wedding when our celebrant went into labour and couldn’t marry us, 1 photographer had to pull out due to Covid and the backdrop we planned for the ceremony fell through. Changing the look and feel of the ceremony 48 hours before was something we never thought we’d have to consider, but it’s amazing what you can do with some white tull, candles, crystals and rose petals. We just had to adapt and make sure we looked after each other when things got tough. Of course looking back on this now we laugh and just think how insane our wedding journey was.
