We took some time to speak with Jonny to find out what makes him different and what he loves about shooting destination weddings.

Points of Difference

What do you consider your unique points of difference as a photographer, and how do they set you apart from others in the industry?
“What sets me apart is my commitment to capturing the real, raw moments that tell the full story of a wedding day. I focus on blending authentic emotions with an editorial touch, making each image not just beautiful but meaningful. My approach is all about rapport, flexibility and transparency, which is why I offer free travel and customise my services to meet each couple’s unique needs. At the end of the day, I want my couples to have a relaxed, enjoyable experience, knowing that I am there to capture every moment without any added stress.”

Artistic Style

How would you describe your artistic style, and how do you adapt it to suit the unique vibe of each destination and couple you photograph?

“I’d describe my style as timeless and cinematic, with a focus on genuine emotion. Having an editorial fashion background, I often bring this into my style, too. I look for those real moments that define the day—small glances, laughter, and quiet times of reflection. I aim to blend those organic moments with a sophisticated, editorial look that still feels natural. My clients often tell me that my images feel true to their day but elevated, which is always my goal.”

Equipment and Techniques

What type of equipment and techniques do you rely on to capture the best shots during a destination wedding, especially in challenging environments?
“I primarily shoot with my mirrorless cameras because of their incredible flexibility and image quality. I also love incorporating 120mm and 35mm film for those moments where I want to bring out an extra layer of texture and depth. Whether I’m shooting digital or film, I rely on natural light to create that soft, romantic glow that really brings out the emotion in each shot. If the shot so requires it, I will fall back on my technical lighting knowledge from my fashion background.”

Working Internationally

How do you manage the logistics of travelling with your photography equipment for international weddings?
Travelling for weddings has become second nature to me (10 years and counting), whether it’s navigating new cultures or dealing with logistics. I handle all the travel arrangements myself, which takes the pressure off the couple, and I make sure to plan out every detail in advance. Being adaptable is key, and having strong local contacts always helps things run smoothly, no matter where in the world I’m working. I am a US citizen which allows me to travel seamlessly between the US & New Zealand.

Favourite Weddings

Can you tell us about one of your favourite weddings you’ve photographed and what made it stand out for you, both in terms of the couple and the location?
It’s tough to pick just a few, but I’ve had some truly standout weddings over the years. One that sticks with me is a beautiful celebration in Mallorca, where the scenery and intimate setting made every shot feel magical. Another was at a backyard wedding in New Zealand, where the suggested West Coast backdrop perfectly contrasted with the couple’s classic style. It’s these unique combinations of setting and personality that really make weddings memorable.”

Personal Collection

How do you ensure the couple feels relaxed and natural in front of the camera, especially in unfamiliar environments?
“As a photographer, I’d say I bring a mix of calmness and energy to a wedding day. My goal is to make the couple feel completely at ease, and I do that by forming a personal connection with them before the big day. When people feel comfortable, the most genuine moments come through, and that’s when the magic happens.”

Challenges of Destination Photography

What are some of the biggest challenges you face when photographing destination weddings, and how do you overcome them to ensure you capture stunning images regardless of the circumstances?
“Destination photography comes with its own set of challenges, like navigating unpredictable weather or working with unfamiliar venues. I always scout the location beforehand and come prepared with portable lighting and backup plans. Cultural differences can also play a role, but being respectful and knowledgeable about the location is essential for a smooth experience. VISAs and insurance are also a bit of a mine field, but having dual citizenships & banking in the US makes it alot easier.”

Inspiration from Travel

How does travel inspire your photography, and how do you channel the different cultures, landscapes, and experiences into your work when shooting destination weddings?
“Travel is a constant source of inspiration for me. Each location offers its own story, and I aim to incorporate that into how I capture the day. Whether it’s the architecture, the landscape, or the local culture, I always try to reflect the location in my images, giving the couple not just a record of their wedding but a story that’s intertwined with where it took place. This is why I’m SO excited about offering free travel (accommodation and rentals, too) to all of my US brides. Very excited to be visiting the vast array of backdrops that the US has to offer.”

Future Plans

What’s next for Jonny Scott Photography? Are there any exciting projects or new directions you’re looking to explore in the near future?
“I’m incredibly excited about expanding my work across more USA locations. With free travel across the States, including Hawaii and Alaska, I’m eager to collaborate with more amazing couples from coast to coast. I’m also exploring new ways to capture the distinct beauty of American landscapes, from the urban energy of New York City to the laid-back vibes of California and everything in between.

Additionally, I’m looking forward to getting more creative with editorial-style shoots within the wedding space and sharing my insights with other photographers who are interested in the world of destination weddings.

Client Experiences

How do you want your clients to experience your services and photography, and what emotions or feelings do you hope to evoke through your work?
“Beyond the images themselves, I want my clients to walk away with an amazing, stress-free experience. From the moment we first connect to the final delivery of their images, my goal is to make them feel supported and excited about the process. It’s more than just photography—it’s about ensuring the couple has the best possible experience from start to finish.”
