Madeline + Daniel by Time With Alex

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

MB: Dan is a landscaper with his own business, and I am a youth worker for children under the guardianship. We live in Eden Hills, SA which is a lovely green/leafy area in the foothills of Adelaide. We have a one-year-old son, Noah, and two dogs, Lulu and Frankie.

We love spending time as a family and love activities such as going on big family bush walks with the dogs, enjoying a gin on our back deck or having picnics in the botanic gardens across the road from our house. We don’t want or need for much. All we want is to have a big family, maybe one day have a bit of land and ultimately, be healthy and happy.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

MB: Dan and I met when I was 17 and he was 20. One of Dan’s best friends was dating one of my best friends and introduced us. Dan was quite shy and barely spoke two words to me and I think I just babbled to fill the air with noise. It wasn’t a very romantic or glamorous meeting but ever since that night we never looked back. That was 11 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun. We are both completely different people since we first met but we have grown up together and experienced so many highs and lows, challenges and big life changes – it’s such a special feeling to be able to do that with the person you love.

When did you first realise that this was someone, you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

MB: I think Dan and I always just knew? There was no question about how long our relationship would last. Ever since we first started dating, we spoke of our future (marriage/children) and what we wanted for our lives together. Even from such a young age, I knew this was going to be the person I would spend the rest of my life with. He has been my best friend since I met him, and I trust him with my life. I know he feels the same about me. What more could you ask for?

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

MB: Dan proposed to me on my 24th birthday in May of 2017. He wrote me a birthday card which said the most beautiful and heartful things inside. He knelt behind me on hand and knee waiting for me to turn around to give me a stunning ring and pop the question. He was so nervous, and his hands were shaking. I had never seen him like that before. It was so intimate and so special. Just us, at home. Dan and I both don’t like the spotlight and he couldn’t have picked a better way to propose. We had a big engagement party at the end of that year to celebrate and then waited a further three years to be married.

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…

MB: Dan and I are very low key and relaxed people, and we wanted our wedding to reflect that. All we wanted was to have a fun night with our friends and family without the stress or pressure of needing to have everything structured and perfect. Dan and I completely fell in love with our venue when we first visited – it was the first and only venue we looked at! Janet, the owner, was so relaxed and lovely and we knew instantly that this was the place we wanted to be married. The garden was so beautiful, and we could envision our boho/vintage style fitting in perfectly with what the garden had to offer. We used Persian rugs and vintage mis-matched chairs for both the ceremony and throughout the reception area as well as purchasing vintage style glassware from op-shops to be used for drinks. Everything we did for the venue was DIY and that alone reflects who we are.

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?

MB: The photographer and the celebrant, hands down! The celebrant sets the mood of the wedding, and the photographer captures the joy and memories of the day. We loved both our photographer and celebrant and they completely nailed it. I couldn’t tell you the number of compliments we had for Amy (the celebrant) and Alex (the photographer). It’s been two years since our wedding, and I am still receiving messages from people asking for their details!

Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?

MB: Dan and I decided to organise our own music as we wanted to create a perfect playlist where we would love every single song that was played. I can laugh about it now… But one of Dan’s very few tasks for the wedding was to remember the charger for the iPhone that the music was playing on. Let’s just say, we didn’t realise he had forgotten the charger until the phone the music was playing on ran out of battery during the peak of the dance floor. It was extremely lucky that a guest had their iPhone in their car. It could have been quite a different experience with a wedding without music!

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?

MB: I had known for a long time what I wanted for my wedding dress. All I wanted was a simple silk fitted dress with a low back. I kept my dress elegantly simple and added detailing in my veil. My veil was a beautiful sheer material that had delicate pearls scattered throughout. I matched this with some beautiful pearl and silver earrings. We found the most incredible sage coloured linen jacket for Dan. It was so different to anything we had seen but it was perfect. We had already sourced some sage green bow ties for the groomsman, so it was meant to be! We kept the jacket as a statement and paired it with a plain white linen shirt and some tan linen pants with brown leather boat shoes. Simple but so well suited to both the wedding. The great part is that Dan has been able to wear all the things he wore on our wedding day again.
