Madi: We’ve been together for 10+ years and met at university in Perth. We both studied urban planning and work as urban planners. We’ve spent the past six years living in Melbourne but have just relocated back to Perth. We met in our first week of uni, but didn’t get together until nearly four years later, in our final year. A friend used to say that you could feel the electricity passing around u. I always wanted to be around Jules.
Jules: I had a crush on Madi for about four years before we started dating, so ending up together was always in the back of my mind. I proposed on Christmas Eve 2020, between one of Melbourne’s several COVID lockdowns. I had secretly booked a warehouse apartment on Airbnb down the road from one of our go-to pubs and staged an elaborate ruse with our friends to invite us out for a drink, but instead, I whisked her off to the Airbnb. Luckily, she didn’t suspect a thing! After the proposal, our friends came over, and we had champagne to celebrate.
Madi: Our vision for our wedding was a fun, stylish, outdoor summer dinner party with retro touches. We took inspiration from Alison Roman’s Nothing Fancy cookbook and injected our personalities and a sense of playfulness into every aspect of the day, from the ceremony to the menus, to our ‘Rave Cave’ dancefloor LED. As self-confessed foodies, amazing food and drinks topped our priorities list. For dessert, friends and family contributed their favourite recipes for a cake table, which we supplemented with a pink heart-shaped buttercream wedding cake.
Jules: Even though we ordered double the recommended number of cases, we completely ran out of bubbles and Pet Nat halfway through the cocktail hour! Luckily, our coordinator made an emergency dash to the bottle shop. During our outdoor ceremony, the workers at the construction site next to the venue were intermittently blasting R&B music from their radio. It wasn’t exactly the backing track we expected, but it was a vibe to get married to a tinny rendition of Akon’s greatest hits!
Madi: I wanted my look to reflect my style and be comfortable so I could eat, dance and have fun. Early on, I landed on the strapless, boucle Sugar Plum midi (with pockets) from Lola Varma. It was giving a ‘Chanel suit, but make it party’ vibes. I wanted a different style for the ceremony and came across the perfect off-the-rack cream suit from Viktoria and Woods about a month before the wedding.
Jules: As we were getting married at the start of summer in Perth, I needed something light. I liked the idea of linen, and M.J. Bale had a great linen cotton blend in a colour that reflected the summer vibe.
Madi & Jules: We also wanted to give our guests a licence to have fun with their wedding outfits, so we made a dress code Pinterest board. This was a big hit, and several vendors commented on how stylish our guests were.
