Matt + Madi by Mitch Pohl

We wanted the flowers to bring a pop of colour that mimicked our personalities and complemented the stunning high ceilings of the venue.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

We love good wine, cocktails, records, and keeping fit and active – particularly long walks and pilates! We LOVE music. Matt is a touring guitarist, and Madi has a profound knowledge of music. Madi is a HUGE literature geek in the best possible way and a writer herself.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

We first met at work. We were both teaching a class that was completely out of our depth and methods: Year 7 Dance. We met each other in a meeting on the first day of Term 1 in 2020 and then began a fascination with each other. It took months for the two of us to speak properly to each other.

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

Really early on. It took a few months, and that was it.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

One morning in early January 2023, Matt woke up to a small card on his pillow. It said to get ready in some active clothes and head out for breakfast. Matt knew something was up but didn’t ask a single question.

The day was filled with surprise cards. After breakfast, there was a card on the steering wheel detailing the next activity at a high ropes course. It was genuinely the most fun, and after, we got some lunch. I then found another hidden card that took us to a brewery to taste some beers, and at the brewery, the coaster for the beer was another card, noting we’d head to some accommodation booked. We had wine and pizzas and enjoyed each other company, and at the front door (on the handle) was another card saying we’d get some dessert (ice cream) and head to the beach. When we got to the beach, there was one last card, with a long letter. Madi poured her heart out, confessing the depth of her love for Matt, and then proposed with a. ring. It was a huge yes from Matt, and many tears were shed of happiness as they watched the sunset that day.

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?

Flowers and food. We had been at weddings so many times where we weren’t fed enough, and we really wanted to ensure our guests were well looked after. Our flowers were our main decoration. We loved The Ko because it was such a blank canvas. We wanted the flowers to bring a pop of colour that mimicked our personalities and complemented the stunning high ceilings of the venue.

Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?

We didn’t have anything to stress over; it was quite relaxed.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?

Madi loved suits and always envisioned herself in one – she made a few appointments and met up with Em to have a custom tailor and style.

Matt has his tailored suit at Oscar Hunt and chose to wear a double-breasted jacket and a bolo tie. Inside the jacket, Matt had Madi’s name under the collar with the wedding date, #RB (for Roo Boys as he’s a North Melbourne Fan), and Best Day Ever embraided on it.

Madi had her suit tailored with Em from ENolan. Em was so comforting and professional, and made Madi feel so at home in her beautiful studio. Madi was never excited about the white dress moment and has always felt more comfortable in the pants and jacket combo. Plus, Madi’s favourite colour is green so that she couldn’t go past the olive/khaki number.
