In this Q&A, we caught up with Meg Maskell Fine Jewellery’s lovely team to talk about the brand’s journey, design ethos, and the magic of bespoke jewellery.
Can you share the story behind Meg Maskell Fine Jewellery? How has the brand evolved since you first started?
MMFJ started back in 2013, in my home garage, going to artisan markets every week. Since then, it’s grown into the beautiful boutique you see today with an incredibly talented team. Growing up around the jewellery industry, it felt natural for me to end up as a jeweller, even though I initially trained in graphic design, I really fell in love with creating something tangible and beautiful that could become a family heirloom. We started by focusing on custom designed engagement rings and wedding bands, and then launched our first ready-to-wear collection in 2014. Now, we’re continuing our growth by implementing modern manufacturing techniques, expanding the team and crafting new pieces every day!
What makes Meg Maskell Fine Jewellery unique? What elements of your designs set your pieces apart and make them timeless?
Our love for coloured stones! Our passion, knowledge and collection of coloured stone is incomparable, each stone is handpicked by me, and they are all truly unique. Our collection showcases stunning Australian Parti, Madagascan, Montana, and Ceylon Sapphires, alongside Champagne, Natural, and Lab-created Diamonds, and Opals. Our designs blend modern style with vintage inspiration, creating timeless jewellery that highlights the beauty of these exceptional gemstones.
Can you walk us through your bespoke design process? How do you collaborate with clients to create one-of-a-kind pieces?
It all starts with your inspiration! Sharing ideas – even something as simple as a favourite colour – and we’ll guide you through all your options. Booking a meeting in person or online to discuss your vision is always a good place to start too. We’ll explore your design goals, materials, and gemstone choices, creating initial sketches and providing estimates. We’ll then help you choose from our wide selection of ethical gemstones and diamonds, if we don’t have your ideal stone, we’ll find it. We then refine the designs with you and provide a final pricing. Our team of talented jewellers will then make your piece right here in our Hornsby workshop. The final finished piece is ready for you to enjoy or give to that special someone. Resizing is also included in all our custom pieces, so if the size isn’t perfect, we will complete the first resize free of charge within the first three months of purchase!

Do you have any memorable stories of how your jewellery has been worn or celebrated at weddings or other significant events?
Every piece we create is special to us, whether it’s a fully custom engagement ring, or our stunning Opal hoop earrings. Seeing the faces of our customers when they receive their piece is why we love what we do.
What inspires your designs? Are there particular themes, materials, or influences that consistently shape your collections?
We are really inspired by Australia’s native flora, our lotus and dune settings are both based off native Australian flowers, the kangaroo paw and lotus flower. The colours we see throughout all of our stones really inspire us to honour the gemstones and create the most beautiful pieces.
What’s next for Meg Maskell Fine Jewellery? Are there any exciting new collections, collaborations, or innovations in the works?
The beauty of custom design is there is never a dull moment!! We’re always designing and crafting new pieces every day, but we are really excited as we have just extended our classic hoop and necklace styles into the world of Montana Sapphires.

We’re constantly inspired to make new designs by everything in our lives. We love having a mix of contemporary and vintage feels to our pieces, this also ensures our pieces will stand the test of time, and be a classic piece for many generations to come.

We believe that jewellery plays a pivotal role in completing a bride’s wedding day look, acting as a personal expression and a finishing touch that elevates the entire ensemble. We strive to create pieces that are timeless and elegant, using high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The goal is to create jewellery that not only looks stunning on the wedding day but also becomes a cherished heirloom, reminding the bride of her special day for years to come.
