When we woke up, he pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him!
Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
N: Chris is a baker, and I am a registered nurse working in aged care. We both love reading fantasy books, watching shows together and going to the gym. We have a beautiful little Maltese x poodle called Bailey, who is the love of our lives. We’ve recently finished building our first home and are hoping to start travelling together soon.
How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
N: Chris and my mum used to work together in the bakery. She brought me along on a work lunch in 2016, where the two of us met. Chris texted a few days later, and we haven’t stopped for 7 years. My first impression of Chris was that he was really quiet and shy. He struggled to look me in the eyes!
C: She was very confident and interesting.
When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
C: A couple of months on.
N: After a few months, when we bought Bailey. Our little family was a great look into the future.
Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
N: The proposal was very lowkey – which pretty much sums up our whole relationship! Chris proposed on our 3-year anniversary. We had gone out for dinner, came home and fell asleep. When we woke up, he pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him!
Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
N: the main vision we had for the wedding was easy. We wanted the whole day to be stress-free, easy-going and fun. We didn’t want to have to think about anything or worry! We wanted a super small wedding with immediate family and our close friends. We went back and forth about whether to hire a celebrant and have the wedding in a park or special location – but decided to just go with the Old Treasury Building. We didn’t want to have to worry about hiring chairs, etc. The OTB was beautiful and had everything – AND it was close to Fonda Mexican, where we had lunch afterwards. We went with The Lavender Haze after having a chat with Jacinta over the phone for photography. She was super relaxed and experienced and really gave us confidence in her. I am a big stressor, and Jacinta was great at answering my emails and questions. Fonda Mexican was amazing, they had a semi-private space at the back for us and plenty of food. We had the best time, and our guests loved it.
What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
N: We didn’t really splurge on anything! We chose what felt right for our day!
Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
N: We were very worried about the weather, as we live in Melbourne. It was raining a bit at the start of the day, but luckily stopped soon after!
The most stressful part was probably trying to organise everyone to do family photos – I have a lot of siblings, and everyone was all over the place. My mum kept holding her bag, and we had to keep handing it to our friends so it wouldn’t be in any pictures!
Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?
N: we mainly wanted to buy clothes we would wear again! We had organised a large wedding in 2021, which we ended up cancelling due to the Pandemic. I bought a wedding dress and everything for that wedding! Since then, I ended up selling it and just felt as though it was a waste of money to buy a dress I’d only wear once and never again.
I struggled to find a white dress that felt right for the occasion. Because it was a smaller wedding and at the OTB, I didn’t want to be overdressed. I wanted to wear something that suited the day and felt like me. I luckily found a dress from Saboskirt that was flattering, felt cool and was comfortable, AND I’d definitely be able to wear it again. I grew my hair out from a buzzcut so my hair would be a bit more feminine to suit the dress, too – and luckily, it was long enough to attach a veil to as well!
I was going to wear a headband, but my sister convinced me the night before to wear a veil and hot-glued pearls to our overnight Amazon delivery. I’m glad I listened to her because it was a definite vibe.
C: I wore a suit I already owned. It was comfortable, and I knew it fit well. I bought a new shirt, belt and a bow tie for the day.
