Effortless tailoring meets timeless elegance
How would you describe the Porter James aesthetic in three words, and how does that translate into wedding day style?

Refined, understated, and relaxed.

We’ve always believed that elegance comes from effortlessness. On a wedding day, that translates into tailoring that feels elevated without being overworked—sharp lines softened by fluid fabrics, and a look that feels as comfortable as it is considered. Whether it’s a beach ceremony or a black-tie soirée, our approach ensures the groom looks composed but never too “done.”
Fabric choice is everything in tailoring. What textures and materials are you most drawn to when creating looks for modern grooms/groomsmen?
As most weddings tend to happen during the warmer months, we lean heavily toward tropical wools and cotton-linen blends. These fabrics breathe beautifully, drape well, and strike the perfect balance between structure and ease. They’re ideal for creating tailoring that looks polished while still feeling comfortable and wearable from the ceremony to the dance floor. Texture also adds depth to a neutral palette, giving even the simplest outfit a tactile richness.

Are there colours or tonal palettes you’re noticing couples gravitate toward right now, beyond the classic black or navy?
While Porter James has always been grounded in a neutral colour story—wedding day or not—we’re currently loving a mix of black, navy, and brown. These tones feel timeless but also a little unexpected when styled the right way. Brown especially has been making a quiet comeback—it’s warm, rich, and pairs beautifully with creams, greys, and even deeper shades like olive or burgundy for winter weddings.
How do accessories—shoes, belts, pocket squares—play into the Porter James Sports philosophy of styling?
For us, accessories are where subtle personal style can really come through. We believe in the right amount of decoration—never too much, but always intentional. Our go-to is usually a black leather derby, which we find incredibly versatile. Lately, we’ve been pairing that with a slim, black western-style belt for a touch of character. And we’re always in favour of a boutonnière—it’s a simple detail that adds charm and a hint of romance to any look.

Which international fashion influences inspire your work most, and how do you reinterpret them for the Antipodean groom?
We often look back to the 80s and 90s, Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren. There was a freedom in those silhouettes—relaxed, generous cuts, attention to drape, and a certain cinematic simplicity that still feels relevant. We reinterpret that for the modern Antipodean groom by balancing that relaxed tailoring with breathable, lightweight fabrics, and by encouraging a more modular, functional approach to formalwear. It’s all about marrying classic codes with contemporary comfort.
Porter James Sports is known for modular dressing. How do you adapt that concept specifically for weddings?
Weddings can often feel rigid in their dress codes, but we’re big believers in flexibility—especially for non-bridal party guests. We encourage rule-breaking, or at least rule-bending. A woollen overshirt or shacket instead of a traditional blazer, a clean slim tee under a jacket instead of a classic button-up—these swaps can keep the look refined but also more aligned with the wearer’s everyday style. It’s about feeling like yourself, just a slightly elevated version.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of menswear in weddings—cuts, fabrics, or the mindset of the modern groom?
The slow death of the skinny or overly slim-fit suit is definitely something we welcome. We’re seeing grooms embrace looser, more comfortable silhouettes that still look incredibly sharp. There’s a shift toward suiting that prioritises fabric, drape, and proportion rather than rigid shapes. The modern groom wants to feel confident, not constrained—and that mindset opens up so much room for creativity in cut and construction.
