I was only 14 when I fell in love with Cale. It began with a friend request and a flirty message on MySpace before we met at a Copeland concert where he spilled his drink on me and our story began. We grew up together and we’ve always been so devoted to each other’s dreams. We are driven by ambition and imagination and want nothing more than to help each other succeed. I never thought Cale would pull off a surprise proposal, but he did. We were on a road trip to Los Angeles for the summer and made a pit stop in Albuquerque to walk through a historic area of the city called Old Town. It was eerie and enchanting and I remember thinking it looked like a movie set. We found ourselves in an open courtyard just as the sun had set and I had given up on our search for an ice cream shop. As I turned to go back to the car, Cale grabbed my hands and said “hold on”. He pulled a box from inside his sunglasses case and proposed. He had planned to propose in Los Angeles, but had no idea this day would be so perfect. It was cosmic. Our wedding was non-traditional and more of a performance than a ceremony. We wanted to build a world for our friends and family to step into that expressed who we are as a couple. We created visual and audio elements at every step, including installations of neon lights, metal grids filled with flowers, and a video projection of outer space with a classical symphony playing in the background. I don’t wear dresses so I decided that if I were to wear one on my wedding day, it had to be powerful. I wanted to look like a warrior queen! Cale is eccentric like me, so he wore a metallic silver suit, a gold chain and a white cowboy hat. If you’re planning a wedding, create something that makes sense for you and your partner, that shows the world who you are as a couple, and take risks. Then apply that sentiment to your relationship.
