Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

We met in law school and had a really bumpy first year because of a lot of personality differences. The fact that Steve was deployed with the army overseas during the second year didn’t help.

We briefly broke up but later got back together and decided to work out our differences little by little. Steve is Korean American and Joy grew up in Hong Kong, so we had completely different childhoods and interests. We have since spent a lot of time learning the differences in each other’s culture and finding the similarities in them by traveling to our home countries together. A lot of our time is spent discovering new foods everywhere and snuggling on the couch watching Netflix. We try to take trips overseas together every year to see as much as we can before we start our own little Korean-American-Chinese family.

Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…

Neither of us wanted a big wedding, and Steve wouldn’t have minded if we had just gone to City Hall and signed the papers. But Joy thought it would be nice to have a small ceremony to celebrate since Steve grew up here and had a lot of friends and family in the area. We settled on a small 60-guest ceremony to celebrate with close friends and family. Joy’s family, bridesmaids, and bridesmaid flew in from California, Texas, and Hong Kong to celebrate. Saving costs was important to us, since we are both frugal and are against spending a huge amount of money on one day. We found during wedding venue research that in New York City public parks, one can get a city permit to have a small ceremony for only $25, and that’s what we went with.

Tell us about your main outfits:

We didn’t want to dictate what the wedding party should wear or force the groomsmen to buy uniform suits, so Joy picked a pastel-grayish color scheme and asked her bridesmaids and bride man to pick their own dresses and suit. Steve mandated a blue suit, but in reality everyone showed up in suits of different shades of blue. We didn’t mind at all! Since Joy’s dress had so much going on already, the only other jewelry she wore, other than her engagement ring, was a ruby bracelet. In Chinese culture during celebrations one should wear something red, as opposed to something blue in western weddings, so Joy wanted to incorporate this in the wedding. Joy also changed into a modern Chinese qipao during the reception. Chinese brides typically wear traditional dresses during tea ceremonies, but since we didn’t have a tea ceremony, Joy wore the dress during dinner.

We both messed up saying our vows, and we laughed about it! Everyone loved the unconventional Chinese restaurant, which served the dishes family style. We all ended up at a Korean dive bar in Koreatown by the end of the night, and our guests who flew in from other parts of the country told us they had a great time there!Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica Perez Categories: Weddings-Real Wedding: Steve & Joy - Photography by Jessica PerezAny advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

Steve: Remember to always have fun, no matter how tough it is!

Joy: Don’t take yourself too seriously, and accept the person for who he/she is.
