Shanay + Darryn by Amy Maree Photography

While I was looking at the ocean view from the balcony he got down on one knee and asked me to turn around, it was very romantic.

Keeping active is a big part of our lives – Darryn enjoys football and I’m obsessed with  Pilates and am preparing to become a Pilates instructor while juggling our two home-schooled children (six and four). We have a passion for travel and during the pandemic bought a caravan and became obsessed with family weekend trips caravanning and living a slower-paced life, so much so that we’ve now decided to sell everything to travel Australia and beyond! Both of us were happy living our own lives when we stumbled across each other at a mutual friend’s party.

Surprisingly, we’d never met despite living in a small town and having many mutual friends. I walked in the door and Darryn turned to look at me, our eyes met and I felt like I knew him but was unsure how, he walked straight over and started a conversation and I felt like he was already a friend of mine. Long before we officially dated I thought some woman would be so lucky to marry Darryn because he’s ambitious, driven, positive about everything and encouraged me in ways I hadn’t experienced before.

I was caught off guard when he proposed at the Mulia Resort in Bali. While I was looking at the ocean view from the balcony he got down on one knee and asked me to turn around, it was very romantic. I wanted a timeless, black-and-white chic mood/style for our wedding. The saying “What is meant for you will not pass you by” is how we felt when we were finally married as we’d had a stressful time because of the pandemic.

We were initially eloping when Covid struck and lockdown stopped us from travelling. We later realised our wedding in Perth was meant to be after all. We had a black and white dress code for everyone including the guests. I was most excited about the bridesmaid’s dresses as I felt they were an extension of the bride’s look and spent more time designing their dresses than my own! I wanted them to feel like mini brides on the day, and they did with a black version of my dress with longer sleeves, a skirt and a veil separating my look from theirs. They also wore black birdcage veils.

Darryn opted for a ‘modern James Bond’ look which was traditional and timeless. My dress was custom Wona and Eva Lendel and after trying on the Wona Concept dress I knew I wanted a little something more. I spotted an over-skirt and asked if I could try it on over the top. We were lucky that this was a sister brand so we asked if the skirt pattern could be released to design a second part of the dress in the same fabric, which they happily did. Having a unique custom dress that I could physically see on me before having it made to fit is exactly what I hoped for. It was my dream dress!
