We wanted to create a visual distinction from our wedding day.
TAYLOR —— I’m the founder of The Idea Haven, a copywriting and brand messaging studio for creative small business owners, and Justin works in condominium development. We met in 2019 on Hinge. Our first date was at a Toronto burger restaurant. As soon as we sat down, it felt like home.
JUSTIN —— When I first saw Taylor’s profile, I responded to her photo with a puppy: “I don’t know who’s cuter, you or the puppy”. Taylor was beyond gorgeous and I knew there was something different about her. There’s a quote from When Harry Met Sally, “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” That’s how I felt about Taylor.
TAYLOR —— We decided to have a three-day wedding weekend with distinct themes and colours for each day. We love to host dinner parties so wanted to bring this intimate feeling to our wedding weekend. Our first night was a nod to the beautiful Tuscan countryside with a pizza party. Our second night was all about incorporating ‘something blue’ into the decor.
We wanted to create a visual distinction from our wedding day, so we opted for no flowers and instead played around with green fruits and vegetables. Because it was an outdoor venue in August, we were drawn to a garden party chic wedding with florals, textures, greenery, and ‘happy’ flowers. We incorporated a challah to symbolise Justin’s background and small ceramic flower trays that I created by hand. Every element, from the parasols to the playlists and bulbous wine glasses, was handpicked or handmade by us to represent who we are as a couple: playful, warm and always keen to celebrate.
JUSTIN —— As an avid suit wearer, I had one vision when it came to my tuxedo: black pants, a white silk dinner jacket and a large Tom Ford-style silk bow tie. Basically, I wanted to look like James Bond in Dr. No, because who wouldn’t?! A unique piece was my late grandfather’s 1960s IWC gold watch.
TAYLOR —— When we got engaged, there was one item I had to have as part of my wedding outfit: Prada slingbacks. I’d coveted them for years and because they aren’t too bridal I can wear them again. My grandma, who wasn’t able to travel to Italy with us, went dress shopping with me and I incorporated her vintage beaded handbag so that she could be with us in spirit.
My ceremony dress was comfortable and elegant, but understated and simple, which gave me the opportunity to get playful with veils. I wore a heart-shaped locket from NYC jewellers Catbird, which Justin gave me on our second anniversary. He glued his fingers partly together trying to cut and paste a photo of the two of us small enough to fit inside the locket!
