Renaissance gardens were designed to inspire awe while also creating calm, and that duality still resonates here. At the same time, the hidden garden rooms and sweeping lawns offer couples and their guests moments that feel deeply personal and romantic. It’s this balance of scale and intimacy that gives the estate its cinematic quality.
When you picture a ceremony unfolding here, what are the most magical moments you witness time and again?
There’s always a sense of wonder on the guests faces the first time they walk down the drive and the estate is revealed – it feels like discovering a hidden world, unexpected in its scale and beauty. During the ceremony, it’s the hush just before a bride appears from behind the hornbeam hedge, the sound of footsteps on gravel, and the collective pause as the couple comes together on the formal lawn. Those moments, framed by the gardens and the big skies we have here, are timeless.
How do couples tend to use the estate’s gardens and architecture as part of their wedding day narrative?
The gardens naturally create a story arc, with the formal lawn as the heart of it all. Couples are drawn to its built-in aisle and central circle, framed by layers of hedging and with the dual backdrop of the reflection pool on one side and the house on the other — there are simply no bad angles for a ceremony here. From there, the celebration can unfold in countless ways: cocktails by the reflection pool, long tables set open-air on the back lawn, entertainment under the pergola, a marquee reception, or games and canapés beneath the walnut tree. The wonderful thing about Richmond is that it never feels the same twice — each couple creates a flow that is uniquely their own.

Golden hour softens everything — the estate glows, the trees catch the last of the light, and the photographs are always spectacular. By evening, the gardens take on an intimate, secret quality under soft lights and stars. And because Richmond sits within a Dark Sky region, the night can open up to the most magnificent, star-filled skies — it’s a breathtaking finale to the day.
What have been some of the most memorable or creative receptions held within Richmond’s walls or grounds?
We had one international couple who were resolute about having their reception outdoors, european-style. It was set to be an incredibly warm day and I was nervous about guests being too hot, but they held the line — and I’m so pleased they did. The result was truly spectacular: nearly 200 people seated at three long tables, breathtaking in their styling, stretching across the lawn. It was magical.
How do you see couples bringing their own style—whether minimalist, romantic, or bold—to complement the estate’s heritage?
Richmond adapts beautifully. Minimalist couples lean into the geometry of the gardens and keep things pared back. Romantic couples soften the formal spaces with florals and draping. Bold couples introduce unexpected colour, staging, or entertainment that plays against the estate’s timeless backdrop. The property doesn’t dictate a style — it elevates whatever they bring.
Guests play such a huge part in the energy of a wedding. How does Richmond Estate help create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive?
The estate’s scale gives freedom, but the gardens are designed as a series of rooms. Guests always feel connected to the celebration, while still able to find quiet corners under trees or tucked along hedges. Renaissance gardens were created to encourage calm and contemplation, and you can feel that intention here — it balances the energy beautifully. That mix of intimacy and expansiveness keeps the atmosphere joyful but never overwhelming.
Looking back, is there a particular couple or moment that feels like the perfect example of what a Richmond wedding can be?
We had a couple who used every part of the estate intentionally throughout their day — some spaces were lavishly styled and designed, while others were left for the gardens to speak for themselves. It was stunningly curated with flow, style, and a sense of formality balanced by comfort. The next day, the energy shifted completely into a recovery day by the pool that felt like a chic beach club anywhere in the world. To me, it was Richmond at its best — like an extraordinary gown finally being worn as it was meant to be, every detail coming alive in motion.
