Victorian Romance

A Darker Bloom of Love in the Cotswolds

A richly layered take on Victorian romance unfolds within the storied walls of Blackfriars Priory, where historic grandeur meets a distinctly modern editorial sensibility. Romantic, tactile and quietly theatrical, the shoot bridges past and present with assured ease.

Set within one of England’s most evocative heritage sites, the 14th-century Blackfriars Priory provides a naturally atmospheric backdrop. Its timeworn architecture becomes an integral part of the narrative, grounding the shoot in authenticity while allowing the styling by 11.11 Weddings to feel both immersive and transportive. Led by Esme Whiteside of Untold Workshops, the concept leans into Victorian nostalgia without becoming beholden to it, instead offering a considered reinterpretation that feels relevant to a contemporary audience.

The ceremony setting captures this balance beautifully. A birdcage pergola forms the focal point, adorned with an antique chandelier and a cascade of crystal fragments threaded through lace and satin ribbons. The effect is romantic yet slightly undone, echoing the Victorian fascination with garden follies and outdoor reverie. Worn pedestal urns and an eclectic arrangement of wrought iron chairs lend a sense of patina and permanence, while the ‘outside inside’ approach softens the overall composition with a sense of intimacy.

This notion of intentional imperfection continues into the tablescape design. Drawing inspiration from the sculptural draping of vintage Ian Stewart and Linea Raffaelli gowns, ivory satin linens are ruched and gathered with a gentle irregularity. Vintage rosettes punctuate each corner, while cut glassware, antique silver butter dishes and lace details create a layered, tactile setting. The mood is quietly gothic, heightened by the glow of church pillar candles and a palette that feels both restrained and indulgent.

The dessert tableau offers a more opulent expression of the theme. Two-toned gold and blush fabric is folded and shaped to catch the light, creating depth and movement beneath an abundant display of patisserie. Fuchsia macarons, candied fruits and rich plum accents sit atop antique silverware, while a collection of candlesticks in varying heights adds a sculptural quality. At its centre, a Victorian bust introduces a personal note, anchoring the scene with a sense of heritage and continuity.

Even the drinks station is approached with thoughtful restraint. A vintage carafe paired with etched silver cups offers a refined alternative to the traditional champagne tower, styled simply atop layers of lace and cotton. It is a quiet moment within the broader narrative, yet no less considered.

Florals by Flur by Mackenzie bring a sense of drama and movement throughout. High contrast arrangements of white lilac against dark dracaena leaves create visual tension, while roses woven through delicate fern add softness. For the tables, blooms are arranged in a way that feels almost indistinguishable, as if growing into one another in an orchestrated wildness. The bridal bouquet becomes a focal point in its own right, combining black calla lilies, soft pink roses and trailing amaranthus for a composition that feels both sculptural and organic.

Captured on both 35mm film and digital by Esme Whiteside Photography, the imagery reflects this duality. There is a softness and nostalgia to the film, balanced by the depth and warmth of digital photography. The result is a body of work that feels intimate, expressive and uncontrived.

Ultimately, this style edit succeeds in its ability to reinterpret Victorian romance through a contemporary lens. It embraces texture, mood and history, while maintaining a lightness of touch that keeps it firmly within the realm of modern editorial.
