Thoughtful storytelling through timeless imagery.
Recently relocated to Queenstown, photographer Caitlan brings a calm, observant approach to documenting weddings with honesty and intention. Drawn to the quiet, in-between moments that often go unnoticed, her work celebrates genuine connection through timeless imagery. Inspired by the ever-changing beauty of the South Island, she creates photographs that feel both refined and deeply emotive. We caught up with Caitlan to talk about storytelling, black and white photography, and the meaningful moments that continue to inspire her.

You speak so beautifully about the quieter moments of a wedding day. What is it about those in-between exchanges—the proud glance from a grandparent or friends laughing over cocktails—that draws you in?
I am often told by a couple that their gallery is filled with moments they never even knew had happened. A couple should not only be able to relive their wedding day through their images, but they should get to experience it in a whole different way. That’s why I am always looking for those small and quieter moments or details that might otherwise go unnoticed. These moments often become some of the most meaningful images in their gallery.
Black and white imagery feels especially important to your work. What is it about stripping a photograph back to emotion, light and texture that you find so powerful?
There’s something so beautiful about the simplicity of black and white images and they have, and always will, stand the test of time. Without the distraction of colour, the eye naturally focuses on what really matters – emotions, expressions, feelings and connection. My hope is that when someone looks back at the imagery, they won’t just remember the moment, they’ll feel it.

Your photographs feel thoughtfully composed, yet never overly staged. How do you create images that feel refined while allowing couples to remain fully present in the moment?
The key is to create an environment where the couple is comfortable enough to be themselves. I’ll offer simple prompts – perhaps asking them to take a walk together, hold hands or reflect on their favourite part of the day. Those prompts create space for genuine moments to unfold – a laugh, a smile, a squeeze of the hand.
You describe yourself as calm and observant. How do those qualities shape the way you move through a wedding day and connect with your couples?
If I’m calm, my couples are far more likely to feel comfortable in front of the camera and confident in my guidance. Being observant is an important part of my role – noticing the quiet interactions to fixing a stray hair before taking a photograph. It’s the little things that make a big difference.

Even after photographing many celebrations, you still speak about being amazed by how unique each one is. What continues to inspire you about weddings?
The people.
I meet a lot of new people each weekend, and often I leave a wedding feeling like I had become a part of the family or I had gained a new group of girlfriends. It’s the aunty who quietly tells me during cocktail hour that I’m doing beautiful work, or the bridesmaid who keeps checking that I’ve had something to eat. I’m really grateful to have been welcomed so kindly into each and every single wedding.
Travel has been a huge source of inspiration for you. How have new places and cultures influenced the way you see light, connection and storytelling?
When I travel, photography for me is about capturing the essence of a place as it is, in that moment. I don’t put a lot of pressure on making sure the light is perfect and that composition is precise. I just photograph what I am drawn to and that is how I aim to capture a wedding too.

Having recently relocated from Waikato to Queenstown, what has this new chapter taught you creatively? Has the beauty of the South Island influenced your work in unexpected ways?
Not only has relocating to Queenstown meant moving my business, but it has also meant rebuilding it in a new region. It’s given me the opportunity to reflect and refine. It has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and, most excitingly, introduced me to an incredibly talented community of vendors and creatives. The possibilities for weddings here in Queenstown feel endless and I’ve taken that as a reminder that there really are no limits to what I can create or achieve.
Everyday, I’m inspired by the mountains. I can honestly say I’ve never had my camera out so much. I find myself constantly photographing them from my window. What I love is how they are always evolving with light and through the weather and seasons. One morning they’re beaming with sunlight, and the next they’re covered in snow.
The South Island’s scale, softness and grounding nature clearly resonate with you. Is there a particular landscape or setting where you feel most creatively at home?
A simple setting in nature is what I am most drawn to – a tree, a mountain side and even a tall hedge. These simple settings allow for the couple to remain the focus. Personally, I feel most grounded and calm amongst the mountains and lakes and I’m incredibly excited for these magnificent landscapes to now be the environment I get to work amongst.

A slightly unexpected one—if you could frame just one emotion from a wedding day and preserve it forever, what would it be?
There’s this moment that comes after the whirlwind of the ceremony, the family photos and the bridal party photos and just before they have their own portraits – it’s suddenly just the two of them, and they look at each other and they take a deep breath, hold each other and it sinks in very quickly that they are now married. It’s a fleeting moment, but it is filled with relief, joy and quiet disbelief all at once.
Looking ahead, what kinds of celebrations and stories are you hoping to document more of as you continue building your business in Queenstown and beyond?
I am excited by the range of celebrations that take place here in Queenstown and the surrounding areas. I am equally excited to capture both intimate elopements and grand multi-day events, and everything in between. The values of my business and the way I work won’t change – my focus will always be on documenting genuine connection, meaningful moments and the people who matter most. Whether it’s two people exchanging vows on a mountain peak or a weekend spent celebrating with loved ones amongst the vines.
