Carla Zampatti Opened Australian Fashion Week With Reflections
There was something quietly powerful about the decision for Carla Zampatti to open Australian Fashion Week’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Presented against the glittering backdrop of Sydney Harbour at the Park Hyatt Boardwalk, Reflections felt less like a retrospective and more like a confident reminder of the house’s enduring relevance within contemporary Australian fashion.

Opening Australian Fashion Week’s milestone 30th year, Carla Zampatti unveiled Reflections against the glittering backdrop of the Park Hyatt Boardwalk on Sydney Harbour — a collection that contemplated past, present and future through the interplay of light, movement and surface.
More than simply revisiting the archives, Reflections explored what it means to look back as a way of understanding rather than nostalgia. Designed by Tanya Emon Beattie, the collection invited a pause — a moment to fully savour the present — while revisiting the house’s defining codes with restraint, precision and unmistakable confidence.

Presented across 45 looks, tailoring remained at the heart of the collection, balanced by statement eveningwear and the sophisticated glamour that has long defined the house. Structured silhouettes were sharpened through subtle built-in shoulder pads, nodding quietly to power dressing and the enduring strength of the Carla Zampatti woman.
Texture and movement played a central role throughout. Liquid sequins shimmered and refracted light with every step, while hand-applied glass bead embellishments created reflective surfaces reminiscent of Sydney Harbour at dusk. Rich devore velvet introduced tactility and depth, offset by soft feather detailing that brought fluidity and softness to the silhouette.

While monochrome remained foundational, flashes of chartreuse, deep red and soft pink punctuated the collection with energy and modernity, offering a fresh counterpoint to the brand’s signature palette. Throughout the show, light itself became a language. Luminous fabrications, subtle sheen and reflective surfaces echoed the shimmer of Sydney Harbour beyond the runway, reinforcing not only the connection to Sydney itself, but also Australia’s place on the global fashion stage.
The show also quietly reinforced the house’s longstanding commitment to Australian manufacturing and craftsmanship. At a time when much of the industry continues to move offshore, the majority of Carla Zampatti collections remain proudly made locally, supporting Australian makers, artisans and the domestic fashion industry at every stage of production.

Presented across both industry and consumer shows to more than 900 guests, the opening night felt celebratory yet deeply considered. Alex Schuman acknowledged the significance of both the brand and Australian Fashion Week reaching this milestone together, noting the importance of showcasing Australian creativity to a global audience while also sharing the experience directly with Australian customers.
Under the artistic direction of Ken Leung, with styling by Karla Clarke and Emma Kalfus, the runway unfolded with a cinematic sense of polish and atmosphere, mirroring the collection’s themes of reflection, emotion and movement. A soundtrack mixed by Dan Lywood layered the strength and sensuality of iconic female voices including Kylie Minogue and Blondie with the cinematic depth of November Strings, adding emotional resonance to the presentation.

Beauty followed the same luminous direction. Hair, led by Shark Beauty and O&M under Madison Voloshin and Pauline McCabe, balanced polish with effortless ease, while Isabella Schimid directed skin preparation toward a flawless, radiant finish that echoed the collection’s fascination with light and reflection.
Elegant, assured and deeply connected to both place and legacy, Reflections opened Australian Fashion Week with a collection that felt timeless yet unmistakably forward-looking.
