Hera Couture Celebrates

HERA COUTURE is celebrating fifteen years of redefining modern bridal fashion under visionary designer, KATIE YEUNG.

Anchored in couture craftsmanship whilst celebrating women in all their complexity, Hera empowers women and sets trends, rather than follows them. Hera also holds a special place in Together Journal’s story: Katie was one of our first advertising partners and has been in every issue since. As we reflect on the milestones and challenges that have shaped Hera Couture, we asked Katie to share her vision for the future of bridal fashion.

What has defined Hera’s journey so far, and how do you imagine the next fifteen years will unfold?

From the very first gown, our vision has been to create pieces that honour love while empowering the woman who wears them, gowns that feel both contemporary and eternal, bold yet deeply refined.

Over the years, what has shaped Hera most is that balance between innovation and heritage. We are constantly evolving our design language, yet always anchored in uncompromising quality.

That spirit remains our guiding light. In fact, the vision that began 15 years ago is not only still relevant, it feels more vital than ever. Hera Couture will continue to push boundaries, exploring new fabrics, silhouettes, and innovative ways to tell stories through design, while remaining true to the timeless principles that define us. Our brides will always be at the heart of that journey.

Your latest collection, Luminaire, feels bold, fresh and unmistakably Hera. What story were you telling with these gowns, and which piece do you think will surprise brides the most?

The story of Luminaire is really about celebrating eternal love, love that endures like the stars themselves. The gowns balance sculptural silhouettes with fluid movement, and feel like effortless luxury without weight. At its heart, Luminaire is about the bride who wants to glow from within, who sees her gown not just as a wedding dress but as an extension of her own light.

Can you take us inside the atelier? What details, fabrics, or techniques are unmistakably “Hera”?

It begins with the finest fabrics. Silks that ripple like water, tulles as light as air, and laces that are meticulously sourced for their uniqueness and beauty.

But what truly defines Hera is not only what you see on the surface, it’s also the invisible architecture beneath. Our gowns are renowned for their innovative inner structures: soft boning that shapes without restricting, hidden corsetry that supports yet feels weightless, and architectural cuts that sculpt the body with precision while allowing effortless movement. The details that stop us in our tracks are the way a seam flows like a line of poetry, the way a hand-applied bead catches the light like a constellation, the way that inner construction gives a bride complete confidence without compromising comfort.

Craftsmanship is not just technique; it’s a philosophy. It’s the belief that true luxury lies in the marriage of beauty and integrity. Every gown should feel as extraordinary to wear as it looks. That moment, when fabric, structure, and design come together in harmony: that is unmistakably Hera.

Your brand embraces inclusivity and individuality. How has this approach reshaped the bridal landscape?

For us, size inclusivity isn’t about reshaping the bridal industry; it’s about doing what is right, what should have always been the standard. Every bride deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and utterly confident in the gown she wears. That has been our guiding philosophy from day one: to empower women, to honour their unique beauty, and to create gowns that allow them to shine on one of the most important days of their lives.

When a bride steps into a Hera gown, the goal is for her to feel joy not only in how she looks, but in how she feels within herself. It’s about giving her that quiet confidence, the knowledge that she is radiant, strong, and deeply loved. Whether in New Zealand or on the international stage, we carry this same belief: that bridal design is not just about creating something beautiful, but about celebrating the extraordinary moment of finding true love for life.

Inspiration can come from anywhere, from the curve of an architectural line to the drape of a silk curtain. What unlikely places, people, or experiences have sparked your most exciting design ideas?

When I design, I often think in architectural terms: how a line can guide the eye, how structure can create both strength and elegance, and how space and light can be shaped into beauty. For me, architecture and fashion are inseparable. They’re both expressions of their time, yet rooted in function.

Some of my greatest moments of inspiration have come from iconic architecture. The Getty Museum, with its clean lines, light-filled spaces, and interplay of modernity with timelessness, has deeply influenced the way I think about structure in gowns. Antoni Gaudí’s works, particularly within the Art Nouveau movement, also resonate with me. His organic curves, fluid details, and devotion to craftsmanship echo the way fabric can be coaxed into sculptural yet effortless forms.

Design is about creating experiences, not just objects. Whether it’s a building that moves you or a gown that empowers you, the essence is the same: to create something lasting, something that makes the heart catch.

Hera Couture gowns have a distinct sense of drama and femininity, yet they never feel overworked. How would you describe the ‘Hera woman’ in three words?

Clean, modern, and opulent. Clean, because there is a purity and clarity to her style. The lines of a Hera gown are intentional, every seam and silhouette designed to enhance without overwhelming. There is a sense of effortlessness in how she carries herself, a quiet confidence.

She’s modern, because she embraces the now. She is forward-thinking, bold, and unafraid of innovation, whether that’s in her personal journey, her choices, or her bridal look. A Hera gown reflects that spirit through architectural cuts, unexpected details, and a balance of tradition with a fresh, contemporary edge.

And opulent, because while she values refinement, she also desires a sense of luxury and drama. Opulence doesn’t mean excess. It means richness in fabric, craftsmanship, and emotion.

What have been your most formidable challenges, and how have those moments shaped you?

Building a couture house isn’t all Champagne and silk! Running an international bridal business is both intensely challenging and deeply rewarding. Every month presents new obstacles, whether it’s navigating global markets, supply chain complexities, or the ever-evolving expectations of modern brides. These challenges could easily feel overwhelming, but instead, they’ve shaped us into a more agile, more resilient brand. We’ve learned to embrace the unexpected, strategize quickly and find solutions with precision and speed.

Communication is key. We respond as efficiently and transparently as humanly possible, ensuring that our brides, stockists, vendors, and partners always feel supported. That responsiveness is a cornerstone of who we are. Over time, we’ve built a team united by a relentless drive to serve our brides with excellence, uplift our stockists, and honour the craft and integrity that defines Hera Couture.

Hera Couture is now firmly established as a global brand. What does international expansion look like for you?

Expansion is not just about new markets but about deepening the ways we celebrate women. We plan to continue offering both couture and accessible luxury so more brides can experience the magic of Hera.

Our vision extends beyond bridal to creating a complete world of beauty and joy: gowns for engagements, ceremonies and receptions, alongside honeymoon wear, fragrance and everyday luxuries. We want women to feel beautiful not only on their wedding day but every day.

If you could design a dream gown to celebrate Hera’s fifteenth anniversary, what would it be and why?

I envision a dream gown inspired by the fluid lines and ethereal femininity of Art Nouveau, paired with the Arts & Crafts movement’s commitment to integrity and handcraft. It would be sculptural yet fluid, bold yet romantic. It would embody what Hera stands for — timeless beauty shaped by artistry, detail, and the harmony of strength and softness.
