JENNY —— We are both architectural designers in Auckland, and our love for design, materials and creativity naturally influenced the way we approached our wedding. We enjoy exploring different styles, playing with texture, and creating spaces that feel just right.
We also have a deep appreciation for handmade elements. That’s why Patrick made my handcrafted wooden engagement ring himself. We love to cook, relax at home, and most recently, we’ve been renovating our house, so it was only fitting that our home also became our getting-ready space.
We met at university and first noticed each other in the wood workshop where we were making models. I remember seeing Patrick using the sanding machine, and he had also been admiring my model.
My first impression was that he had a cold, serious face, didn’t talk much, and showed no expression. Meanwhile, Patrick thought my designs were great and appreciated that I actually understood his weird sense of humour.
We wanted our wedding to feel simple, modern, and elegant. Calla lilies were the centrepiece for the bouquet and buttonhole, while the rest of the florals were kept minimal. The ceremony floral nest was designed to work with the scenic view at Kauri Bay. We love natural landscapes and wanted to enhance them, rather than overpower them with flowers.
The venue’s concrete wall gave us a simple, textured backdrop that contrasted with our tea ceremony outfits. Other elements, like the trees at the entrance and the forest up on the hill, reflected what we love most in our surroundings, and created an even stronger contrast to our simple black-and-white looks.
My tea ceremony dress was a modern take on a traditional Chinese style, and it worked beautifully with the gold accessories gifted by our family. My hair and makeup combined modern details with traditional touches — the gold hair tie, red lip colour, and thin eyebrows brought everything together.
Patrick chose a classic, timeless tuxedo from Working Style. My white wedding gown by Hera Couture fit our theme perfectly: modern, simple, and elegant. Its open back with long necktie was a standout detail. One of the most special pieces from the day was my veil, which had handwritten lyrics from Patrick stitched into it. Looking back, our wedding was exactly as we envisioned it: thoughtful, understated, and a true reflection of who we are.
