Larissa + Steve by Lightsmith Images

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

I work in Marketing and Steve is a producer in breakfast radio, we both love music, horror movies and our little sausage dog Snags.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

We met through mutual friends when we were 18 mid 2010, I was obsessed with Steve’s emo hair and tall lanky body, plus he was in a band. Steve didn’t really pay any attention to me at first because he was busy on his phone, I did trip over the night we met which has stuck in his mind. We made out in secret for a couple of weeks in the church carpark and then we started dating in November.

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

We were in the car and take on me by A-Ha came on and he belted it out like nothing I’d ever seen before – that was when I was like oh this dude is so much fun, I could get used to this for the rest of my life.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

Steve proposed when we were away for our 8 year anniversary. He planned to propose on a mountain walk but there were too many people around, then planned to do it on a sunset cruise but again too many people, and did it on the walk back on the beach. It was so perfect being just the two of us. He got down on one knee with the ring and asked me to marry him and I thought he was joking, when I finally realised he was serious I burst into tears, then we went and bought a carton of Coronas to celebrate!

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…

We wanted every single detail to reflect who we are as a couple. For everything to be like ‘Ohhh that’s so Lis and Steve!’ We wanted a super fun atmosphere, a killer dance floor, and after watching Schitt’s Creek we landed on the black and white theme for the guests. The party kicked on after too and we ended up heading out to a drag show after the wedding followed by some Fortitude Valley pizza at 3am. Such a perfect night.

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?

The band – we knew we wanted a live band since Steve is a musician and we checked out band after band until finally landing on JSB! It was the hardest element to lock in because we had a particular style we were after.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?

Steve was stoked to get a custom fitted suit jacket, and was set on doing a velvet number. We tried a few different colours and he landed on the navy, he absolutely loved it and looked incredible. I had a totally different dress style in mind but tried this one on and fell in love with it, I wanted big heels, statement earrings and black nails. One of the ladies at the dress fitting suggested a french tip instead of the black nails but she wasn’t really getting my vibe, it’s a super hilarious story because she also suggested some pearl earrings instead which is totally not me. Glad I stuck to my guns because I’m so happy with the way everything turned out.

Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?

When I was walking down the aisle I was trying not to cry, and I was about to start bawling while everyone was looking at me so to break the ice mid aisle I said ‘heeeeeeeeeey’ and everyone started laughing. It was great, totally sums me up as a person and now Steve and our friends always say heeeeeey to me in the same voice!

Also my bride champagne glass shattered in the stem and we duct taped it back together which looks hilarious in the photos.
