Lucy & Karl by Mel Boulden

My dress inspiration came from Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, she’s the quintessential 90s minimalist aesthetic I do – the complete style icon. I made it my own with family jewellery, puffy vail, beautiful rose flower heels and longer-length gloves.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

Karl – I work in media and content, so I’m very creative. I love film, photography and storytelling, but anything that allows me to be creative and colourful.

Lucy – I have worked in the health & beauty industry for the past 7+ years. Currently at MECCA as an E-Commerce Trade & Content Manager. I love beauty, fashion, and fun (but mainly just being surrounded by my beautiful family and friends)

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

Karl – Lucy and I have known each other since High School in Melbourne. Given we met 18-years-ago it’s a bit hard to remember my first impression, but Lucy has always been a sweet, kind, humble person for as long as I’ve known her.

Lucy– We met a very, very long time ago! Karl is the most genuine person and I’ve loved his warm, vibrant nature since the day I met him.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

Karl– I completely butchered it. We went to dinner and a play, but the play ran over, there was a near fire evacuation, and the bar where I made a reservation thought we weren’t coming. I had foolishly mentioned to the bar staff that I was going to propose that night, and they practically gave it away by asking about celebrations and offering free champagne. We left the bar feeling flustered, but the rest of the night was perfect. We went to another bar for a drink and then took a walk in the city. I proposed on William Street bridge overlooking the city near Flinders St Station.

Lucy– Yep he butchered it. But nonetheless, a hilarious tale to repeat for years to come.  I shouldn’t be too cruel he gave me a gorgeous handwritten note, I will keep with me forever.

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?

Karl– Good quality champagne and it was certainly worth it.

Lucy – The flowers were a close second.

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…

Lucy – Classic, but with spunk probably sums it up nicely. I love the traditions of a wedding and what comes along with it all, but it had to feel like Karl and I so it had to be spunky. Our tables, classic white napkin and linen with crystal glassware but paired with volume full-colour block flowers and stunning illustrations menu and name cards in Tab’s beautiful script to spunk it up. Our dress code – black tie, but women told to wear what they like which meant colourful, short dresses, long dresses, skirts, pants whatever they please. Our ceremony was traditional catholic priest but a shorter service outside in the beautiful vineyards of McLaren Vale, my favourite part.. our Mum’s spoke about Karl and my relationship. Our drinks hour, was classic in the sense it was on the stunning Mitolo deck serving oysters and cocktails and champagne, but spunky in the sense we had the Lebanese drummers come and surprised everyone half way through which led to a party on the lawn listening to the most amazing Arabic music (one of our friends actually joined in the drumming fun). Then the ceremony, classic and traditional in the sense it was 3 courses with speeches but spunky in the sense we had everyone celebrating with vodka shots pre-entree and dancing HARD on the stage pre mains being served.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?

Karl  Lucy knew my outfit because we picked it together. I trust her opinion above all else and her confidence gives me confidence! However, she didn’t know about the cummerbund I added to my suit. She loved it, and I was happy! I wanted to stand out in a simple way, and it was a great addition to my outfit.

Lucy – My dress inspiration came from Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, she’s the quintessential 90s minimalist aesthetic I do – the complete style icon. I made it my own with family jewellery, puffy vail, beautiful rose flower heels and longer-length gloves. I knew I didn’t want to change from my wedding dress, it was too beautiful to take off. However, I had a lot of fun in my fluffy Daily Sleeper pyjamas the morning of.
